BREAKING THE PLASTIC CODE
Why aren’t some plastics accepted
in Kitsap County?
The numbers inside the recycling symbols are used by the
plastics industry to identify specific resin types, which is related
to the chemical make-up of the product. It is NOT meant
to indicate a certain plastic is recyclable in all geographic
areas (e.g., a clamshell container may have a #1 or #6, but it is
currently not accepted by local sorting facilities).
Some basic conditions must be met for
a material to be accepted:
• The sorting facility must be equipped to handle the material
• The material should not pose a high contamination risk
• A viable and sustainable market must exist to make it
economically feasible to collect
• The market conditions must be stable and consistent
• Sufficient volumes and a consistent supply of materials
must be ensured
