Germ District 9550 Governor Ida Portella Advance Australia Fair... Australians all let us rejoice; For we are young and free; We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and rare; In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing Advance Australia Fair. “Fiona McCarthy - Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF) work locally, nationally & internationally” President’s Report Mental Illness is a major issue in both Australia & around the World, yet gets very little publicity and is often not talked about as an illness. So it was rather gratifying on Friday night to see the massive turnout in support of our Trivia Night which was designed to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health who is targeting mental health. Rotary Grace... To Frank and his many helpers, we owe a large vote of thanks as we had a fantastic turnout from our club as well as a number of other Rotary Clubs, with the end result being around 160 people and a likely net profit of $3000 for this important charity. The numbers exceeded Frank’s estimates but highlights the wonderful effort this group of people did to make the night a huge success. RCoM Vision Statement... The club has also had a number of members putting in many hours assisting with the Combined Rotary Clubs project of collecting the donated equipment from the recently closed Garden Settlement Retirement centre. This has involved filling 4x40ft containers, then unloading them at a warehouse for later processing. All this plus our normal commitment to the Bunnings BBQ days and the Markets has been a big call on members and I thank you all for the effort. We break Thy bread of Brotherhood, And thank thee Lord for all things good, May we, more blessed than we deserve, Live less for self and more to serve. “To become more visible within the community with a focus on diversity of gender and culture as a community service club whilst embracing the avenues of service of Rotary International”. RCoM Sponsored Child... Augustino Whilst all the above is going on, our own Jan Johnson is visiting other clubs to gain support for a joint purchase of “Helping Hands” so that we can hold another night of making these items to give some of the many people in Cambodia, and other places, replacement hands due to accidents still occurring from unexploded land mines. At $500 per hand they are not cheap but is life changing for the recipients. And keep Sunday May 21st free for a special event at Ron & Vicki Degenharts place to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. More information to follow over the next week or so. Just remember our Rotary Theme this year, “ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY”, and our own clubs motto of “MAKING A DIFFERENCE”, as both are very true of the wonderful things we as a club are doing, We should be very proud to be Rotarians. Have a great week. Page 2 of 8 Spinifex Edition “35” for 2016-17 Rotary Club of Mundingburra Inc. 23rd March 2017 Last Week in Review TRIVA NIGHT Whilst we did not hold a formal meeting last week, the clubs Trivia Night to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health was extremely well attended. Yes it was St Patrick’s Day without any green beer, on a rather warm night in a not very well air controlled location however that did not stop the people coming in the door. Ross River, Thuringowa Central all had attendances plus a large table of the Townsville Rotaractors. The end result is that we expected to be able to make a donation to ARH for $3000 which will go towards the major task of looking at Mental Health issues. Frank had estimated we might get close to 130 attending, however despite two tables not turning up, he had to scramble to get more tables and chairs for 160 people that ended up enjoying the night. Just shows his team knows how to market the event. Our Promotions and Raffle girl Charmaine Frank and his family (Barbara & Sam) did a great job and backed up by Jan Johnson, Charmaine Binnie, Shane Smith and Aloisia to make it a great night. And how could you forget the MC the magnificent Wayne Haller who battled the hot room and did a wonderful job to making the trivia a fun event for everyone. The winning Team - must have used their phones for the answers Our MC Wayne Haller working the crowd As well as a good roll up of our own club members a number of other Rotary Clubs attended to assist on raising funds for ARH. Whilst I may miss a club, Daybreak, Sunrise, Page 3 of 8 Our Irish visitors Spinifex Edition “35” for 2016-17 Rotary Club of Mundingburra Inc. 23rd March 2017 Last Week in Review GARDEN SETTLEMENT WORKING BEE A number of our members have put in many hours during the past week to assist with the collection and relocating of special beds, tables, chairs, fridges and many more items from the former Garden Settlement Retirement Centre at Pallarenda. Bluecare, who own the village have relocated to a new address and offered the equipment to Rotary. The task now is for Rotary to sort the good equipment and then contact the various community groups to assess who would like some of the equipment. We will not be selling any of it, but do want it to go to those individuals in need. The loading & and then unloading, of 4x40ft shipping containers has been hard work, however as a combined Rotary Clubs project, managed to create some good relationships with lots of other Rotarians in Townsville. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to give much notice of events, and it was more difficult following directly on from the Riverway working bee, however our clubs turnout has been fantastic. And even our youngest club, the Townsville Rotaractors, have even managed to have people attend to lighten the load. Getting settled into school… Glen’s exchange has been a long time coming and a cause of stress for him. Initially he was selected to go to Japan and was to leave with his group in January, however the Host Japanese District let him down with continued delays, saying they might be ready by April, some 3 months late. Clearly this was unacceptable and a late request was made to Taiwan, who accepted Glen readily. As can be seen by the photos, he has been welcomed warmly by a professional team. Glen has already begun his language course.
