The fascination with trucks and trains for little kids
(and big ones, too) is intriguing. Knowing that, our
merchants continue to improve the products available
for you each holiday season. I know it’s still weeks
before Christmas, but since displays are up in the
stores and you may be making a list and linking it
to your money, I thought you might like some of the
“backstory” on moving vehicles.
Admittedly we like real trucks best, with 270 tractors
(the front part), 640 trailers and 350 drivers in our
fleet. Still, the new Wegmans toy truck is impressive,
bigger than previous ones and with bells and whistles!
You can try out the truck’s effects in the box without
unwrapping it. On the top of the tractor are buttons
saying “push forward button now” (and the wheels
spin) or “back it up now.” There are flashing lights
on the side, shiny wheels, and lots more. The price:
$29.99 for a two-foot long machine with five red
tomatoes depicted on the side. It was made in China
for us, but has been tested before it was shipped to
be sure there’s no lead and then again when it arrived
at a private testing lab in Buffalo. Much smaller
but still a Wegmans truck is a new $1.99 Pez candy
dispenser with a sushi illustration on the side.
However, If trucks aren’t your thing, maybe you’d like
a train…a really big die-cast metal freight train with
an oval track. It’s by Lionel, the long-time leader in
electric trains; they made this one just for Wegmans.
It has an air whistle, puffing smoke, and headlights.
There’s a Super Pasta boxcar, a Super Yogurt tank car,
and bringing up the rear, a caboose with an image of
the Wegmans Organic Farm. $179.99, so plan ahead.
Not recommended for children under eight, but
there’s no upper age limit!
