Prior Knowledge and Skills Required
Student should be able to
1. understand the terms “reproduction,” “genetic information,” and “parent” and
2. sort pictures of examples of reproduction into two groups: examples in which the offspring receives all of its
genetic information from one parent and examples in which the offspring receives all of its genetic information
from two parents.
Description of Task
Student sorts pictures of examples of reproduction into two groups: examples in which the offspring receives all of
its genetic information from one parent and examples in which the offspring receives all of its genetic information
from two parents. This task may be administered only to students in grade 8.
Directions for Task Administration
1. Prior to task administration, teacher prints picture cards and label cards from Extra Pages 1 and 2 in color and
cuts them out.
Note: Description cards matching the picture cards are provided on Extra Page 3 for use in assessing students
needing visual support.
2. Teacher places page 3 work template, picture cards, and label cards on work space.
3. Student/Teacher reads directions from page 3 work template.
4. Teacher checks for understanding of the directions.
5. Student uses his or her most appropriate mode of communication to provide responses.
6. Student/Teacher records student responses on page 3 work template.
7. Teacher corrects the responses, then completes the Task 1 Summary on page 4.
8. Teacher submits Task 1 Summary information through the online Task Bank.
