Art Gallery: Henri Matisse and Fauvism
Henri Matisse was the founder of Fauvism, a short-lived art style that used a lot of bright colors.
Learn about this famous artist. Then, try painting in the Fauvism style!
What you will need:
Easel (or chair with a back and masking tape)
Construction paper
Tempera paints (bright colors)
Paintbrush
Water
Drip cloth or newspaper
Paper towels
Directions:
Fauvism used a lot of bright colors! For example, if an artist was painting someone with black
hair, they might paint bright blue streaks in the hair. Or, they painted a sky bright purple when
it was really light blue. To create your fauvism painting, pick out something you’d like to paint.
It could be a person, your cat or dog, an outdoor scene, some of your toys, your bedroom—the
choice is yours!
After you decide what to paint, set up your easel and painting paper. If you are not using an
easel, tape your paper to the back of a chair. Put a drip cloth or newspaper below the painting
set-up to catch any mess.
Now being painting! Use the paintbrush to paint large, wild strokes on your construction paper
to recreate the scene in front of you (or a portrait of a person, your dog, cat, etc.) Remember to
wash your brush when you change colors. And don’t forget to use bright colors! If the sky is light
blue, think about painting it bright green or orange. If your cat is black, think about painting her
bright blue or yellow!
When you have finished your painting let it dry. Then share it with your friends and family! Explain a little bit about Fauvism to them and point out some of the bright colors you used in your
artwork.
