The region is characterized by the famous Volcano Pacaya, which is a main landmark of the region and attracts hikers year long. The area is surrounded by five major rivers and the calderas lagoon. This fertile, volcantic terroir makes creates ideal agricultural conditions and the area is well known for producing corn, fruit, and coffee. To preserve soil and biodiversity the coffee is shade grown, which is beneficial for the development of the cherries and also the native forest and wildlife.
