These days, it receives far less attention, since the Christmas shopping season begins even before the Halloween decorations have been put away. But Thanksgiving is a very important holiday, especially considering our busy lives. It is a time to kick back and relax, watch a football game or go to a movie, and enjoy a huge feast. It's also time for us to give thanks to God, for His blessings upon our great nation. There is no nation in the world that has more to be thankful for than we do. Sure, this year has undoubtedly seen its share of challenges, and the economy has added a degree of difficulty for many of us. But let‟s not forget the abundance, the opportunities and the liberties we enjoy as Americans. We must never take for granted the principles that make our country great: a foundation of freedom; a belief in democracy, justice and the upholding of law; the right to worship and speak freely; a capitalistic economic system, whereby we may exchange values with on another on a voluntary basis… and many more. Nor should we forget the sacrifices of those who secured our freedoms and those who continue to preserve it. We all have many things to be thankful for, so take some time over the Thanksgiving holiday to count your blessings. Make a list of everything you‟re thankful for. I promise it will be an enjoyable and mood-lifting experience. I‟ve already made my list, and you are on it! With a grateful heart, and on behalf of your entire protection team at Merritt Hall Insurance, I wish to say Thank You for your friendship, your trust and your continued patronage. We wish you and your family a wonderful, relaxing, enjoyable and safe Thanksgiving. Black Friday: a day that strikes fear in the hearts of retail clerks everywhere and finds eager shoppers camped out in cold parking lots hopeful of getting their hands on the best bargains of the year. It's the shopping day to end all shopping days. If you're brave enough to venture out long before dawn, your rewards will be bountiful, if you know how to get the best deals that is. These tips will help: (Continued on pg. 2) Page Page 22 News Tips to MakeReport Your Life Easier, Safer, and Happier... Theand Hauswirth Hauswirth Report November 2011 (Continued from page 1) 1. Prepare. Decide exactly which deals you want to take advantage of. This isn’t the day to price shop. Make a plan of which items you want to buy and where you’ll get them. 2. Price Match. Find out in advance which retailers will price-match Black Friday ads. Many retailers honor the lowest advertised price, even if the ad isn’t theirs. So while others are waiting in long lines to get the newest gizmo at a fantastic low price, you can go to a less crowded store and get the same deal. 3. Go Online. Most retail chains have a website, and many of them begin honoring Black Friday deals online at midnight. This can put you ahead of the pack, if you start ordering items online while the rest of the country is still in a turkeyinduced coma! All those turkeys have a weight equal to 4.48 million individuals of average build; roughly the weight of the entire population of Singapore! Benjamin Franklin, believing it to be more respectable than the bald eagle, proposed the turkey as the official bird of the United States. Potatoes were not part of the early Thanksgiving feasts, as Irish immigrants had not yet brought them to North America. In 1939, with the intent to extend the Christmas shopping season, President Franklin Roosevelt bumped the celebration of Thanksgiving up one week earlier than usual. This decision was met with such disapproval and public outcry that he admitted it was a mistake two years later and declared the fourth Thursday in November as the official national day to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. The first meal eaten on the moon (by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) was roasted turkey from foil packets. Sarah Josepha Hale is credited as the person most responsible for Thanksgiving becoming a national holiday. The route they were flying had a layover in another city, and the airline captain helped her get up to speed. Upon their arrival, he showed the stewardess the best place for airline personnel to eat, shop and stay overnight. The next morning, as the captain was preparing the crew for the day's route, he noticed the new stewardess was missing. He knew which hotel she was staying in and called to find out what happened. When he was connected to the stewardess’s room, she answered the phone, crying, and said she couldn't get out of her room. "You can't get out of your room?" the captain asked, "Why not?" The stewardess replied: "There are only three doors in here," she sobbed, "one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says 'Do Not Disturb'!" © Dan Reynolds - used with permission
