Day 2, Sunday In North Platte, Nebraska, a unique experience awaits us at the Cody Park Railroad Museum. The only Challenger 3900 series steam locomotive on public display is located right here, a city born in 1866 when the Union Pacific stretched its rails across the prairie, racing to complete the first transcontinental railroad. We continue on to the Golden Spike Tower where the history of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Bailey Yard are explored. Our day ends in Fort Morgan, CO. B Day 3, Monday We have a thrilling day ahead of us as we start out with a scenic ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time. Today, the Loop is once again a popular tourist attraction and an exceptional way to see the Clear Creek Valley. We overnight in Grand Junction, CO, where we will also have an included dinner this evening. B, D Day 4, Tuesday This morning we enjoy a leisurely drive through Colorado’s beautiful scenery following along the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers arriving in Silverton by early afternoon. There will be time to enjoy lunch on your own and take advantage of unique shopping opportunities in the town’s false-fronted buildings recalling the Wild West. We then board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which is powered by a coal-fired steam locomotive. Starting in Silverton and following the Animas River through the mountains of the San Juan National Forest, we behold ruggedly majestic scenery. The train’s destination (and the location of our hotel accommodations for tonight) is Durango, CO, which began as a mining and smelting center during the gold and silver booms. Dinner is included this evening. B Day 6, Thursday This morning we tour the U.S. Air Force Academy (subject to availability) in Colorado Springs. The Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to provide cadets the knowledge and character essential for leadership, and the motivation to serve as Air Force career officers. Next we take a ride on Pike’s Peak Cog Railway climbing to the top of Pike’s Peak – a “must-see” when in this area. We remain in Colorado Springs for the night. B Day 7, Friday Before departing Colorado Springs, we visit the stunning Garden of the Gods where we find an abundance of plant and animal life as well as magnificent red sandstone rock formations.
