What was the Columbian Exchange?: The Columbian Exchange was the transfer of
animals, plants, culture, human populations, diseases, technology and ideas between the
Americas (New World) and Europe, Africa, Asia (the Old World).
DIRECTIONS: Choose one of the crops below. Research the origins of your crop by
reading “The Journey of New World Foods” and any other sources.

Asia, etc.) that use the crop you’ve chosen.

separate page. You must include the list of ingredients. Try to provide
some simple directions, but you don’t have to include all of them.

STEP THREE: Underneath each of your recipes, write a paragraph, analyzing the
overall influence of your dish/recipe and how the New World crop was integrated, or
used. (You must do this for each recipe).

Imagine that you are a merchant in the 1500’s that has brought back one of
the crops from the New World (the Americas). Create a poster that
advertises the crop’s uses and would convince people to try it.
DIRECTIONS: Research one crop that developed in the Americas (such as corn or
potatoes) and its impact on the world today. Show your findings in a poster that
advertises the crop’s uses and convinces people to try it. You may choose to use a
different crop from the one you used in your recipes (Part B).
