ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Tonight we present the work of the distinguished English playwright,
Oscar Wilde.
As a dramatist, Wilde added nothing new to English drama. His
characters are mere typ~s; and he follows a technique of insincerity and
sheer theatricalism. However, in his aim to entertain, he was successful.
Tonight's play, The Importance of Being Earnest, is a "comedy of wit"
which traces its leinage back through Sheridan to Congreve. Already it
has become
a classic.
