Stability Matters
in a World of Change
Rising interest rates. Changing inflation expectations.
Shifting geopolitical risks. We’ve designed income solutions
that work for clients in a changing market cycle.
In today’s low-yield environment, core bond strategies are
vulnerable to rising interest rates and other macro factors.
Traditional fixed-income strategies may not be able to deliver
on multiple client objectives for an income stream, capital
preservation and volatility management:
• The upside/downside profile of many fixed-income
investments has become skewed to the downside. Yields may
not be sufficient to offset price declines associated with
increased interest rates, creating potential for a negative
total return on a bond portfolio.
• Passive fixed-income investments could eventually lose the
tailwind from a secular decline in interest rates. This would
expose the unmanaged risks in such investments.
Stability matters as markets change so rapidly.
New Choices
for a Changing World
Portfolios can always benefit from having a core allocation to quality fixed-income assets such as investment
grade government or corporate bonds. Core assets can provide a measure of safety and capital protection.
But yields on the most traditional core asset – government bonds – remain low by historical standards.
Building on a solid core by incorporating other fixed-income
assets, like high yield bonds or income-oriented equities,
creates the potential to enhance diversification, mitigate risk
and increase returns. Fixed-income securities that carry
higher risk, like high yield bonds and floating rate loans,
tend to have lower credit ratings but pay a higher yield for
that risk. Assets that have a lower correlation to traditional
fixed-income securities can also enhance diversification.
The rationale for such a “core plus” approach
is to push a portfolio to achieve a higher
expected return for the same level of risk.
For income investors, Mackenzie offers active
solutions across the fixed-income spectrum, from
“core” bond funds to active ETFs and funds that
deliver “plus” assets.

with investment funds. Please read the prospectus before investing. Investment funds are not guaranteed,
their values change frequently and past performance may not be repeated. Morningstar Star Ratings
reflect performance of Series F as of March 31, 2017 and are subject to change monthly. The ratings are
an objective, quantitative measure of a fund’s historical risk adjusted performance relative to other funds
in its category. Only funds with at least a three-year track record are considered. The overall star rating
for a fund is a weighted combination calculated from a fund’s 3, 5, and 10-year returns, as available,
measured against the 91-day treasury bill and peer group returns. A fund can only be rated if there are a
sufficient number of funds in its peer group to allow comparison for at least three years. If a fund scores in
the top 10% of its fund category, it gets 5 stars; if it falls in the next 22.5%, it receives 4 stars; a place in
the middle 35% earns a fund 3 stars; those in the next 22.5% receive 2 stars; and the lowest 10% receive
1 star. For more details on the calculation of Morningstar Star Ratings, see www.morningstar.ca. Quartile
rankings and peers beaten are calculated by Mackenzie Investments based on the fund series-level
data Morningstar provides. The CIFSC categories, Star Ratings, number of funds in each category, and
annual compounded performance for the standard periods are: Mackenzie Strategic Income Fund Series
F, Canadian Neutral Balanced category: 1 year – n/a stars 15.8%, 3 years – 4 stars (494 funds) 6.4%,
5 years – 4 stars (356 funds) 7.4%, 10 years – 5 stars (147 funds) 7.2%. Mackenzie Global Strategic
Income Fund Series F, Global Neutral Balanced category: 1 year – n/a stars 10.2%, 3 years – 5 stars (885
funds) 8.7%, 5 years – 5 stars (595 funds) 9.6%, 10 years – 5 stars (137 funds) 6.3%. Mackenzie Income
Fund Series F, Canadian Fixed Income Balanced category: 1 year – n/a stars 7.2%, 3 years – 5 stars (397
funds) 4.9% , 5 years – 5 stars (285 funds) 5.3%, 10 years – 4 stars (136 funds) 4.0%.
