January 2016
Resolution Guiding Questions
Dear Cardinal Parents and Guardians:
I hope that you and your family had a
joyous winter break filled with fun and
some relaxation as well. As we begin a
new year, many of us see it as an
opportunity to start fresh and set new year’s resolutions that
will help us do better and be better in the new year! If you’re
anything like me and 92% of the world’s population, I do well
for the first couple of weeks sticking to my renewed plans,
and then all too often, I fall back into old habits. What I have
learned however, is that rather than think of resolutions as a
yearly event, I try to think of resolutions in terms of single day
events leading up to the larger goal I’ve set for myself. In the
application of this theory, I have been pleasantly surprised at
what I find I’m capable of accomplishing in 12 short months!
It appears that setting a goal and chunking it into specific,
daily actions, appears to have a much higher yield for
accomplishment than setting a lofty, ambiguous goal.
When I think about it, this is exactly the process we follow in
our school improvement efforts here at Chippewa Falls
Middle School. Our building leadership team utilizes our
school data to set realistic goals at the start of each school
year and we develop specific actions that are continually
monitored throughout the year. Progress checks are made
along the way and adjustments to the actions are considered
based on those checks. Ultimately, we evaluate our goal
attainment and/or growth toward the goals at the end of the
year. Documenting and celebrating the growth that our
students have made in the school year is a truly rewarding
experience!
 What will you be able to do 12 months
from now that you are unable to do
today?
 What are the specific actions you will
take to get there?
 How will you monitor your daily
progress?
 What will you do to celebrate when
you have reached your goal?

Students can experience this same joy and pride that comes
from accomplishment. By setting positive, realistic, and
specific goals and tracking their progress along the way, they
too will soon discover the power they have within themselves
to be more awesome than they are right now!
May this new-year be one of growth and accomplishment for
all of us!

On November 23, student leaders Megan Wegner, Brook
Dewberry, Alina McIntyre, Jacob Polzin, and Sidney Polzin
from our WEB program and our Student Council engaged in a
day long leadership summit sponsored by WASC at UW-EC to
learn more about how to leverage student leadership at
CFMS! Here is what our participants had to say about this
experience…
“I learned that meditation and breathing exercises before a test can
be helpful”
“We liked the keynote speaker. He was funny, motivating, and
encouraging”
“We learned about a summer leadership camp that sounds like fun
to attend”
“We learned strategies about teamwork and leadership”
“I liked the exploration activities that identified my personality traits”
“I liked the smaller group because it forced us to step out of our
comfort zone and work/meet kids from different schools”
The students really enjoyed participating in an activity called
the “Looney Olympics.” The students inquired if the WEB and
student council members have a similar event here for all
students to participate in. Follow-up discussions will occur in
January to explore this option.
6th Grade Orientation Dates/Events planned
We are SO EXCITED
about our new crew
of 6th graders who
will join us next year.
We’re already
planning great activities for the 2016-2017 school year. Do
you have a 5th grader who will be joining us next fall? If so,
there are some upcoming events for you to know about!
The middle school principal, Susan Kern, and counselor, Liz
Pukrop, will be visiting 5th graders this month at their
elementary schools to provide information about the middle
school, as well as their music options for 6th grade.
There are also two orientation nights for 5th graders and
their parents. The night will include general information
about the middle school, course selection materials, and a
self-guided tour. In order to accommodate the number of
families joining us on these evenings, we ask parents to
consider the following schedule:
Monday, February 1 • 6 pm: Families NEW to CFMS
Tuesday, February 2 • 6 pm: Families that have had another
child attend CFMS
It’s Time to Start Planning for 7th Grade!
th
Current 6 grade students will be getting
th
their 7 grade course selection
information January 13-15. Due dates
and specifics will be given to your
student in their science classes according
to the schedule listed below. Please ask
your student about the course selection
information when they get home.
In August, the middle school will host two Registration Days.
Every middle school student and a parent or guardian MUST
attend one of the Registration Days to get their picture taken,
turn in required paperwork, review their schedules/find
classrooms, and try their lockers. The Orientation Night does
NOT replace the required student Registration Days held in
August.
Registration Days in August will be:
Tuesday, August 9, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm or
Wednesday, August 10, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Falcons: Wednesday, January 13
(Mrs. Arendt/Rm 404)
Road Runners: Thursday, January 14
(Mrs. Zimmerman/Rm 218)
Skylarks: Friday, January 15
(Mrs. Stowell/Rm 204)
th
7 grade unified arts classes are six weeks in length and are
th
randomly assigned, just like they were in 6 grade. Students
th
have the opportunity to take World Language in 7 grade,
which consists of six weeks of both Spanish and French.
th
Music is not a required class in 7 grade.

The first day of school will be WEB
Day! WEB Day will take place on
Thursday, September 1. This is a
specially designed day just for
incoming 6th graders and their 8th
grade mentors ONLY. This is a highenergy day that includes an
assembly, team-building activities,
a building tour, and a schedule run.

students safely install the Libraries
around the community in the
spring.
Youth Connecting Communities, Tuesdays 4:35-5:30pm

further develop your own skills. On the last two days of class,
we will hold an open lab where you will teach adults in the
community how to use their devices or how to use Facebook.
These classes are an excellent opportunity for students to
volunteer their time and serve others. If your child is
interested in signing up for one of these classes, please

Your “Someday” is now…
A Kitchen Makeover for the New Year
How can one ordinary person -- you
or me -- make a positive difference in
our community? One way is to
become a Mentor. The steps are
simple; the outcome could change a
life. Spend 30 minutes, one day a
week as a Mentor with the Chippewa
Area Mentor Program. There are a number of students
already waiting to be matched.
Take volunteering off your
New Year’s Resolution List!
When the New Year begins, it is also seen as a fresh starting
point to making changes, especially after indulging during the
holidays. Many New Year’s resolutions revolve around
working at improving the eating habits of the whole family. If
you want to change your family’s eating habits, the key is to
build a healthy kitchen. Here are some tips to giving your
kitchen a makeover ready to support those New Year’s
resolutions.
 Make a list of healthful foods that you would like to
ensure are in the house. Bring the list to the grocery
store for purchasing the items.
 Consider some changes and ease the family into
healthier ingredients one at a time. The changes
don’t all have to happen at the same time. Some
options may include buying whole grain bread
instead of white bread, or low-fat milk instead of
whole milk.

Do the math to make sure there is enough of each
food group for all family members. For example, if
each person should eat a minimum of two pieces of
fruit per day, then make sure there is enough fruit
available to meet that minimum. A family of four
would need eight pieces of fruit per day. Do this for
all food groups to find out how much to buy of each.
Embrace the can to lighten the burden on your
pocketbook while ensuring healthy foods are always
on hand. Many canned fruits and vegetables retain
as much nutrient value as their fresh and frozen
counterparts.
Change the environment to make healthy foods
more inviting. Once you bring your groceries home,
clean and cut the fresh produce so it is ready to eat.
You can put them in plastic bags and containers to
store in the refrigerator, or fill a bowl on the counter
to make it convenient to grab and eat.
An unexplained rash. Any time a rash is associated with
fever, the child may NOT come to school until that fever is
gone for 24 hours without fever reducers such as ibuprofen
and acetaminophen. Sometimes, a rash is a sign of a
contagious disease such as chickenpox. Sometimes, rashes
are not contagious, but are uncomfortable and itchy from
contact with something the child is allergic to.
Red or crusty eye lids or drainage from eyes: This can often
mean your child has conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye. Not all pink-eye is contagious. Sometimes it is just
allergies or other irritations that are causing the red color, but
until we know for sure, which means we must have a note
from the doctor stating the condition is not contagious, or
until the redness and drainage are completely gone, your
child must remain out of school.
Any contagious disease that requires antibiotics (ie. strep
throat, pink eye). Students can return AFTER they have
been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
Headache, cough, sore throat, or congestion severe enough
to interfere with attention to school work.
Here are some important guidelines to
consider when you hear those words, “I
feel sick; I don’t want to go to school
today.” These guidelines are the
standards of practice the CFAUSD School
Nurses follow for the comfort and safety
of all of our students and staff.
Keep your student home if any of the
following apply…
Temperature over 100 degrees in the last
12-24 hours. If you suspect that they may
be sick, please check their temperature with a thermometer
before sending them to school. If they have a fever, it is NOT
appropriate to send them to school, even if you give them
acetaminophen or ibuprofen and their fever breaks. Your
child will still be contagious and will also not be feeling well
enough to learn. Coming to school sick (and possibly
contagious) not only exposes others to the illness, but also
delays your child’s healing time. Once the medicine wears off
and the fever returns, your child must be picked up anyway,
and valuable healing time has been lost. Children must be
fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of medicine, before
returning to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours. If the vomiting or
diarrhea occurs more than once that day, or if they are
associated with fever, you MUST keep your child home. Even
if these things happen only one time before school starts, and
your child feels better immediately afterwards, it is still wise
to watch for a few hours to see if it happens again before
sending him or her back to school. If your child is spending all
his or her time at school feeling sick, then not much learning
is taking place!
8
Flare ups from asthma, which would make it difficult to
work in school.
If your child sees a doctor, have him/her bring a doctor’s
note upon return!
Happy New Year from your RCU School $ense Team!
Earn-Save-SHARE-Spend
Ask your child… “If you could volunteer
anywhere doing anything you wanted,
what would you do?”
With the New Year comes making
resolutions. Why not make a family
resolution to SHARE time together
volunteering? It’s fun, and there are opportunities to
volunteer your time and share your talents in every
community around the world. Just like saving, when you
SHARE your time, it really adds up. Make someone’s day by
helping the elderly, sorting items at a food pantry or spending
time with animals at an animal shelter. All of this SHARING
adds up. So, have fun with this
resolution and make time to SHARE!
Your RCU School $ense Team would
love to hear about how your child is making a difference. The
CFMS RCU School $ense is open every Friday at lunch, so
have them stop by and tell us about it.
If you have any questions about the RCU School $ense
program or how to get your child started saving at school,
please contact; Amanda Farnham at

Educational Excellence
2015-2016 Concert Schedule
Writing is a focus in all subject
areas at the middle school. Part of
Mr. Hemauer’s seventh grade
manufacturing curriculum is for
students to learn how to write
formal letters to companies. This
lucky group received a nice
surprise recently when a box of
items from Smuckers was
delivered, making their class
period just a little bit sweeter!
During the month of January,
students at the Middle School will be
taking the winter assessment to
identify growth in their lexile scores.
Classroom teachers use these scores
to help identify growth by students as
readers. The data is also used to help identify students that
might need additional help in reading. As a parent, you can
use the lexile numbers to help your son or daughter find a
book that matches his/her reading ability. When students
read within their lexile range (50L above and 100L below the
Lexile Measure), they can be expected to have about a 75%
comprehension rate. They shouldn’t be frustrated with their
reading, but the selection should be hard enough that it
encourages reading growth. Remember, it is ok to look at
books that are above or below the Lexile range, just be aware
that the book may be a very easy read or a challenging read.
Lexiles don’t take into consideration the content of the
selection; there are many excellent books with a lower lexile
that are used in classes as an instructional tool to stimulate
conversation.
The following link will help you find books that are interesting
to your son or daughter and fit their Lexile range.
https://lexile.com/fab/. By the end of January, each student
at the Middle School should be able to provide you with an
updated Lexile score. If you have questions about their Lexile
score, make sure you contact your child’s reading teacher.

The automated phone system
utilized by the middle school for
attendance is designed to ensure
your calls are received and
recorded accurately. The
automated system allows office
staff the opportunity to serve the needs of the students and
staff throughout the school day without having to take
incoming attendance/message calls, as those should be going
to the attendance mailbox. We want you to feel confident
when leaving a message on the attendance line. An envelope
blinks on the screen of the phone when new messages arrive,
which office staff will then retrieve and process as warranted.
With a student population of close to 1100 students,
parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss transportation
and other issues prior to the school day in an effort to reduce
the phone calls to the office and interruptions to the
students/classroom. We understand that occasionally
circumstances out of your control may require a last minute
call; however, your cooperation in limiting last minute calls
for passes/messages unless absolutely necessary would be
greatly appreciated.

“We are the Mighty Cardinals”
I hope that all of you had a Merry
Christmas and you enjoyed spending
time with your children over the
holiday break.
I wanted to give all parents a few
reminders to ensure that 2016 doesn’t
bring any unwanted, surprise phone
calls from school. It is always a good idea to talk with your
children about not bringing tobacco products, lighters, drugs
and drug paraphernalia, alcohol products, knives and firearms
or other dangerous weapons to school. This also includes
having these things inside backpacks and vehicles on school
grounds.
Please don’t think that your child would never bring these
things to school. The principal’s at Chi-Hi and the Middle
School and I spend a great deal of time working through
these exact incidents every month. Please help us and your
children make our schools safe by checking rooms, backpacks
and vehicles for prohibited items periodically throughout the
school year.
Thank you and let’s be safe out there!  Officer Mark Johnson
The Importance of the Whole Child as a Learner
As you open up
conversations with your
middle school child about
how things are going at
school, it is a great
reminder to be sure to
address all aspects of
your child’s school
experience. As we know, the definition of a good student
includes more than just their academic performance. In
conversations with my own middle school daughter, rather
than simply asking about what she learned on a particular day
and doing homework and grade checks, we extend our
conversations to include how well she is navigating
relationships with peers and adults, how she is doing making
healthy lifestyle decisions, and how she is managing her
responsibilities of being a lifelong learner with regard to
responsibility, organization, timeliness, participation, and
taking initiative. By emphasizing all of the qualities that are
important for her to be a well-rounded student, she develops
an understanding that her student identity is much more
complex than a single grade on a progress report.
Recently I had the opportunity to meet with business leaders
in our community as well as college professors and advisors
from our area universities and technical colleges. Our
meeting was intended to provide us, as educational leaders,
feedback on what types of coursework they would
recommend to better prepare our students for their postsecondary opportunities. The feedback we received was that
the coursework certainly is important, but equally if not more
important to them, was assuring that our students leave
school with the ability to problem solve, think critically, take
initiative, communicate (writing and speaking clearly and
accurately), and are able to work as part of a team. One
business leader even commented that in his hiring process he
has had brilliant applicants who did well academically in their
post-secondary work, but their lack of soft skills lead him to
go a different direction.
Certainly in the structure of our middle school and through
the multitude of diverse learning opportunities we provide
for our students both in and outside the classroom, we are
committed to helping your child grow as a whole student in
partnership with you so they are prepared and confident to
successfully continue their educational journey.  Mrs. Kern
You know the appeal that technology holds for kids – cell
phones, tablets, gaming, social media, and on and on! And no
doubt, you’re aware of the negative impacts that technology
can have on youth. But what about the positive ways it can
be used to support your child’s well-being?
CFMS is excited to announce a new partnership with
University of Wisconsin-Extension to bring you eParenting®
High-Tech Kids. Rather than focus on the negatives,
eParenting® provides ideas on using digital media to stay
close to your child and strengthen family relationships.
Starting later this month and through mid-May, you will be
receiving weekly email with “Be an eParent” in the subject
line. With just a click or two, you will be linked to a blog site
from University of Wisconsin-Extension where you can read
short, practical, positive tips on using digital media with your
child.

classes benefited greatly from being a part of this activity. A
great time was had by all!
