Fun With Fractions!
Your goal to be able to simplify fractions like this:
and to use multiple operations to express fractions like these in simplest form.
to add fractions like these:
Eventually, you should be able to solve this:
But right now you need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions because next week you are going to learn about these:

We're going to begin with something simpler, though.
To add and subtract fractions, you need a common denominator. One way to find the least common denominator (LCD) is to pick the largest denominator. Start listing its multiples. When you get to a multiple that is also a multiple of the smaller denominator, stop. You have found the LCD.
(Why do you want the LCD? What happens if you miss a multiple along the way?)

Once you have found the LCD, rewrite both fractions so that they have the same denominator. You will need to multiply the numerator by the same number as the denominator to make equal fractions. Then add or subtract the fractions by adding or subtracting the numerators.

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. You do NOT need to find an LCD! It might help to reduce the fractions first, though. Use mental math to look for common factors in the numerator and denominator. Consider all the fractions as one big fraction.

To divide fractions, multiply by the reciprocal. Or "Keep, Change, Flip," as your elementary school teacher might have said.
