When restoration work was started on the convent in
preparation for the public opening a large quantity of religious
paintings were found. These religious works are fine examples
of Peruvian Viceroyalty period art.
During the restoration period around 400 pieces were
professionally restored by art experts, allowing today’s
enthusiasts to view a collection of great historical and artistic
value.
The most important works are displayed in two large
exhibition halls set out in the form of a cross. Another small
adjoining room completes the museum and gallery complex.
In the art gallery we find some of the most important religious
works of art in South America. There are also fine examples of
the famous “Cusco School” of painting that represents the
fusion between Spanish and Inca cultures.

Santa Catalina Monastery
Cultural Extension’ Rooms
The opening up of the Santa Catalina Convent to the public in
1970 succeeded in promoting Arequipa as an international
tourist destination.
Thanks to the enlightened vision of a group of local
entrepreneurs, Promociones Turísticas del Sur S.A. was created
with the aim of restoring and managing the convent for the
benefit of international tourism and the cultural heritage of
the city.

Contributing with the cultural and
touristy development of Arequipa.
Constructed from Sillar, a white volcanic stone quarried
locally, the convent is considered the most important and
impressive colonial structure in the city. The continual
earthquakes and tremors suffered by the region have forced
changes in its structure and it therefore has some singular
architectural characteristics. The nuns constructed private
cells within the convent where they could lead isolated lives,
protected by high walls sheltering them from the surrounding
city. Behind these walls a mixture of colonial Spanish and
native architectural styles have been preserved.
The Santa Catalina Convent is located in the historic center of
Arequipa and after sustaining damage in the 1958 and 1960
earthquakes was restored and opened to the public on August
15th 1970, the 430th anniversary of the city’s founding in
1540.

Santa Catalina Convent
“A city within a city”
Arequipa - Perú
In 1579, less than 40 years after the Spanish arrived in the city
of Arequipa, the Santa Catalina de Siena Convent was founded.
Since its inception, women from diverse social backgrounds
have entered the convent to serve as cloistered nuns, never
again to return to their homes and families.

Blessed Sister
Ana
Sister Ana de Los Angeles
Monteagudo was a nun
who lived in the convent up
until her death in 1686. In
1985 she was beatified by
Pope John Paul II. Various
miracles and predictions are
attributed to her and she
currently has a cult
following. Sister Ana’s cell
and personal effects still
exist inside the convent and
demonstrate how she led
her life.
