He published in his church bulletin “The reasons I don’t go to the movies.”: “Because my parents made me go as a boy. Because no one speaks to me when I am there. Because they always want money. Because the manager never visited me in my home. Because the people who go there never live up to what the movies teach anyway.” September Anniversaries 9/6 9/11 9/13 9/17 9/20 9/21 9/22 9/27 Wayne & Olga Benson Darryl & Faye Wybourn Bill & Sherry Bohnsack, Jan & Cathy Daniels Brad & Diane Kempel Kyle & Trinity Zimmerman Bill & Rhonda Hooker, Brad & Keelee Lobdell Duane & Peggy Eilders Adam & Karen Kryder Thank you to Nancy Price for donating the following books that her Mother had in her collection to the LUMC Library: The Holy Land in Colour by Sami Awwad The Holy Land – A Picture Book to Remember Her By – Crescent Books Let’s Travel in the Holy Land – Edited by Darlene Geis Where Jesus Walked – Ken Duncan September Birthdays 9/2 9/5 9/6 9/7 9/9 9/11 9/12 9/13 9/14 9/15 9/16 9/19 9/20 9/21 9/22 9/23 9/25 9/26 9/27 9/28 9/30 Lyle Temperly Beulah Haeft, William Haughan, Emily Ryan Ron Buchenau, Cody Rogers Lynn White Lisa Oellerich, Rita Rowe Rebecca Edler, Kim Nelson, Kathie Schulz Grace Potter Josef Edler, Brent Taft Austin Simmons Eric Boyer, Mervin Mader, Sara Mae Schulz, Ruth Wingert Sharon Hammill, Curt Oellerich, Marty Voreis Carol Borchardt, Laverne Pax, Brandon Seuring Jared Kempel, Theresa Kepner Seth Dascher Kent Seuring Peyton Heitkam Mitchell Temperly, Sarah Todd Brad Lobdell, Gary Price, Lori Robieson David Kepner, Chloe Mader, David Peight Tom Smith, Conor Stanley Natalie Heitkam, Elsie Lobdell Have fun at the Lena Lions’ Fall Festival September 9th and 10th , Downtown Lena Finance Committee Minutes August 8, 2016 Mick Flynn opened the meeting. Those present were: Mick Flynn, Judy Buchenau, Gary Rich, Randy Kryder, Kim Nelson, Lois Shelton, Steve Rothschadl, Chris Bartelt Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved with the following change: Scott Lewis from Freeport had accepted the Youth Director position, but then declined due to possible relocation out of state. Mick requested Chris send a copy of the Finance Reports to those on the committee who missed the meeting. Steve Roenneburg and Pastor Brian are working to get the new computer up and running. Gary stated that the Finance Committee is responsible for establishing the budget for 2017 and that we need to contact the chairpersons from the committees to see if they foresee any major changes for their programs for next year for which they would need to have additional money added to the budget. Gary explained the Memorial sheet and Endowment sheet to everyone. The After School program needs donations if it is to continue. It costs approximately $500/month for the program. This is not a budgeted item and has been self-funded to date. Do we need to ask people for donations? The group discussed what to do to increase contributions from parishioners. We should encourage folks to use Electronic Funds Transfer. Mick asked Chris for a list of folks who are presently using this method. We looked over the Balance Sheet and the Profit & Budget VS Actual. Judy and Kim will check in to what the charges were in Account 6006 (office supplies) on the P&L as that number seems high. Mick stated we need to get the garage roof fixed as soon as possible. We are waiting for a quote from the person from Beloved Church who has offered to do the work. We need to find out if he is bonded and insured. Other quotes are out for comparison. Gary mentioned that the Trustees are in charge of making this decision. Then Finance needs to approve the funding. Randy stated the bids for Sidewalk repair from M&M Concrete were: Sidewalk in front of church $1,800 and sidewalk and driveway behind church - $3,944, Total $5,744 Motion made by Gary and seconded by Steve for Finance to give Trustees OK to go forward with Garage Roof and Sidewalk projects. Funds would be provided by a special offering and the difference would be provided by funds available. Motion carried. A request will be made to the congregation for donation for these capital improvement projects for sidewalks and roof. Next meeting is October 10 at 6:30 p.m. Mick closed the meeting with a Bible reading and prayer at 8:00 p.m. Submitted by Chris Bartelt, Financial Secretary UMW NEWS 8/6/16 Well August is here and time to get out the fall decorations again. This year has just zoomed by. We had our first meeting for the October 22nd Breakfast, Sweet Shoppe and Craft Event. We are making a few changes on it this year. You can either buy a ticket for the full buffet at $7.00 or buy a cinnamon roll and coffee or milk for $1.50. It makes for less confusion for those selling tickets. We are also combining the list of people for the bakery and craft items. If you are on that combined list, you may make bakery items or make craft items or you can make both. It will be your choice. We know people that have been on one list or the other and have wanted to do the opposite, so now it’s up to you. If you are no longer able to bake or do crafts, but want to contribute money to pay for the advertising and supplies, that is totally acceptable. Money is always a help for expenses. People on the breakfast buffet section of the list have not changed. Check the lists in the newsletter. If your name isn’t on the lists, please call one of the chairpersons listed and we will gladly add you. Our next meeting to make sure everything is on schedule will be September 8th at 1:30 pm. Anyone can attend the meeting. Since we cut our contribution to the district this year to do mission work in our own county, the Sleezer Home for girls in Freeport was chosen. Our date for having a pizza party with the girls was set for August 20th. We also learned that they were in need of school supplies, so we asked the congregation for their help to supply what the girls need. As I write this, we haven’t done the shopping yet, but Pat, Judy and I are looking forward to gathering items for the girls. We are praying that a number of you joined us for a chance to meet the girls and let them know that they are loved. Coming from troubled homes and other environments has to be a tough life that thankfully our own children haven’t had to face. Our women’s bathroom project, back by the Sunday school rooms, is finally done. If you haven’t checked it out, do so. No more straddling the toilet to get the door shut. Yippee!! Jerry Edler also found a leak in our water supply and we had him fix that while he was working here. We should make up the money from the leak in no time. Election of our president position will be done at our September meeting. That is the only office that is open this year. It is a 2-year commitment. We will also be discussing items on our budget for next year. Scott and Lisa Stich were given the award pins for outstanding work for our church. Next meeting is September 3rd at 9:30 a.m. Hostesses are Beulah Haeft and Cathy Rich. May the Lord bless all of you, Maryanne Gritzmaker UMW President . There is only one way to know what grief is, that is to lose someone, somewhere or something that you have loved. No amount of conversation or study can give anyone more than just sympathy for the emotional and mental anguish of grief. That is why the best support for grieving persons is in a group where everyone is experiencing grief. In such a group with the help of a trained Grief Support Facilitator, your story can be told and your feelings described to people who will understand and accept you just as you are. The best groups are not large, two or three can be a group, and a group is too large when some people never talk. Because a Seminar is intended to give information as well as encourage personal sharing the groups are somewhat larger. Usually a group will continue to meet following a Seminar to continue the support. If you are experiencing grief right now please consider this your invitation to join the Learning to Live with Loss Seminar here at Lena United Methodist Church in the Adult Classroom (Sowers Room) on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 P.M. If you need transportation, or would like to have further information, call Pastor Jeff Baer at (815) 541-6558. The Seminar is free of charge, a gift to you from Lena UM Church. There will be six sessions of the Seminar (9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2) please note that there will not be a session on October 12. ************ On Saturday, September 17th, the 5K Blue Nun Fun Run will be held at the Jane Adams trail head north of Freeport off by-pass 20.
