Dear Parents, Family and Whanau , During the month of April all the teachers and children at Hannah’s House have been on a top secret project. Yes secretly on a mission to help better our planet! What inspired me to start this was the day I At the start of the year the staff all opened up a child’s lunch box to find one biscuit sat down as a team and talked about coated their personal goals. My goal was to cut GLADWRAP! So over the month of April we all out or decrease the amount of glad wrap collected our glad wrap and kept it in one of these... we were using and become in this non eco friendly lunch wrap, more environmentally friendly. Putting those three R’s to use Reduce Reuse Recycle The day came to see actually how much glad wrap our centre was throwing away. The bin was full! It was a shock to see actually how much glad wrap we would throw away 1 month = 1 65 litre bin 6 months = 6 x65 litre bins a total of 390 litres 1 year = 12 x65 litre bins a total of 780 litres If that’s not enough to shock you then read on... How long do you think it would be if we tied all these bits of glad wrap together? Ruby “Bigger than the world” Troy “No! As big as a giant!” Charlie “It will be 100,000 kilometres long” Max “it will take 2001 years to make it” After some talking they decided they were going to measure it with some rulers... And after trying so very hard to measure it they decided it was just too big! After some more talking we decided we would see how many times it would go around the playground. Troy “5 times” Max “lots and lots of times” Ruby “This many” (holding up 7 fingers) Charlie “I think it will go 3 times” So we nearly made it from the gate over the sand pit down to the bottom fence round the trees past the veggie garden over the bridge and almost back to where we had started. What a lot of glad wrap! With some clever thinking they all joint hands and made it back to gate! Great job! Throughout this experience we talked and learnt about our environment and what the rubbish we throw away does to our world. We talked about what we could use instead of glad wrap and where all our rubbish goes when we put it in the bin. This lead to talking about what we could do with our food scraps instead of throwing them in the rubbish. Look out in next month’s newsletter to see our solution to this issue! So our challenge to you and everyone in your family, think about your child’s future and what it means to you. One little thing like cutting out glad wrap from your weekly shop will help better our environment for our future generation. There are many other options than glad wrap such as..... Did you know the total waste to reach landfill in Auckland alone would fill a rugby field and go as high as a 10 story building each MONTH!
