ANNUAL REPORT FI SCAL Y E AR JULY 1, 2014–JUNE 30, 2015 Nourishing the Whole Person Our Mission Meals On Wheels of San Francisco and its volunteers provide seniors what they need to live independent and dignified lives — nutritious meals, professional social work and a friendly visitor. MEALS DE LI VE RED 2007 523,000 2014 1,300,000 2015 1,600,000 0 500,000 1,000,000 1,500,000 2,000,000 Dear Friends, We are pleased to present our Annual Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. If there is one statistic in the past year that underscores the importance of our work, it is the number 1.6 million. This is the number of meals we delivered in 2015; 300,000 more meals than in 2014 and 3 times the number of meals in 2007. As we prepare to serve the growing number of homebound seniors in the years to come, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to you, our donors and supporters, who make our work possible. Together, we deliver! This report contains our most up-to-date audited financial information and statistics. More so, it includes personal stories about how our staff and volunteers positively impact the daily lives of the seniors we serve. The programs we offer go far beyond ‘meals’ and ‘wheels.’ In the past year, we provided home repairs for veterans, distributed disaster preparedness kits, and spent over 15,000 hours providing social work support for our clients. Our mission is to nourish the whole person. With your support, we have been able to deliver meals and provide safety checks day in and day out for 46 years! We are proud to be the only citywide organization to deliver two nutritionally balanced meals a day. For the thousands of clients we serve, that crucial knock on their door reminds them they are not alone. Equally important, it serves as a call-to-action for all of us to strengthen our safety net for so many seniors. Thank you for your support this past year. We couldn’t do this work without you! Best wishes, Lois Chess President of the Board Ashley C. McCumber Executive Director NOURISHING THE WHOLE PERSON — OUR SERVICES Home-Delivered Meals We deliver hot and frozen meals along with fresh packed lunches and other food staples to 3,500 seniors a year. We are the only organization in San Francisco to deliver two meals a day and we offer options that address special dietary needs, such as low-sodium and diabetic requirements. Safety Checks We help ensure our clients’ well-being and safety by alerting emergency contacts or services when a senior is injured or fails to answer the door. Nutrition Counseling Our registered dietitians perform more than 1,470 nutrition counseling sessions each year. Social Work Our professional social workers conduct regular home visits, help seniors connect to other social services and provide case management when needed. Friendly Visitors and Good Neighbors We match volunteers with seniors to offer companionship, battle isolation and assist with grocery shopping and other errands. Spring Cleaning All Year Round Corporate, community and school groups volunteer with seniors and give their homes a one-time, pick-me-up cleaning. Home Safety and Urgent Needs We provide health and safety items like grab bars, smoke detectors, microwaves and refrigerators to seniors in need and help them find volunteers or other resources to assist with small repairs. CONSUELO, 82 MOWSF Client Since 2012 Consuelo moved from Cuba to San Francisco in 1962, four years after her beloved San Francisco Giants moved from Brooklyn to the city. As a devoted Giants fan, she has been to all but 4 opening day games. Conor moved to San Francisco ten years ago, eager to discover a city full of opportunity for a young, energetic software engineer. Their paths to San Francisco could not have been more different, yet they’ve become fast friends through Meals On Wheels of San Francisco. Consuelo summed it up when she said, “I am so grateful for Meals On Wheels. After the food, it’s the people that it brings into my life.” Consuelo was thrilled to meet Larry Baer, President & CEO of the Giants. 163 MOWSF seniors are paired with Friendly Visitors and Good Neighbors. MEALS ON WHEELS OF SAN FRANCISCO CLIENTS Who We Serve Meals On Wheels of San Francisco serves those with the greatest physical, social and economic need. The seniors we serve are frail, have limited ability to purchase or prepare meals, and have little or no support from family or caregivers. They are also confronted with the anxiety of living in San Francisco — one of the most expensive cities in the nation. Many of them must survive on incomes of $970 a month or less. In 2014–15, MOWSF saw a 23% increase in the number of meals we served. In total, we delivered meals to more than 3,500 homebound seniors last year. 7% 20% 23% 59 & under 13% 60–64 of our clients receive NO OTHER 19% SOURCE OF FOOD 65–69 85+ Age 23% 75–84 15% 70–74 E TH NICI TY Caucasian 39% African American 29% Asian/Pacific Islander 19% Hispanic or Latino Other 10% 62% of our clients LIVE ALONE 78% 3% of our clients live Gender 49% 51% 96% of our clients SELF-IDENTIFY AS LOW INCOME below the federal poverty line ($970/month) ARNE, 79 MOWSF Client Since 2014 Recently, Arnie fractured his right ankle. While he is determined to get better, his social worker, Anna, was able to switch his meals from a weekly delivery of frozen meals to a daily delivery of hot meals to help him along the way. She described Arnie as an enthusiastic and independent senior. He is a retired nurse who enjoys the neighborhood where he’s lived for the past 30 years. She recalled the first time she met Arnie at his initial home visit. “He was really chipper with a great attitude.” Arnie attributes the food from Meals On Wheels as one of the big reasons he stays so healthy and independent. “They really helped me after my fall. I couldn’t live without them!” Arnie moved to San Francisco with his partner, Frederick, in 1979. They lived together until his partner died in 1996. Right to left; Arnie, his sister (visiting from New Hampshire) and his partner Frederick at Fisherman’s Wharf in 1990. Last year, MOWSF social workers spent 17,352 hours assisting seniors. We have more than 3,500 active volunteers, who engage in community service activities, assist at fundraising events and work directly to assist homebound seniors. Thank you to all 559 volunteers who were #CruisinWithTurkeys on Thanksgiving Day at MOWSF. All together, they delivered 1,800 meals to homebound seniors AND shared these fabulous photos along the way. #CruisinWithTurkeys Find us on social media @mowsf FINANCES: JULY 1, 2014–JUNE 30, 2015 Assets Current Assets 2014–2015 2013–2014 $548,772 $585,527 Cash and Cash Equivalents - Restricted 10,375 10,373 Deposits 64,683 48,651 Contracts Receivable 368,994 226,146 Other Receivables 169,596 182,596 Prepaid Expenses 53,195 60,918 $1,215,615 $1,114,211 Property, Furniture and Equipment, net $916,274 $964,007 Investments, marketable securities 3,337,975 2,724,850 $5,469,864 $4,803,068 Cash and Cash Equivalents - Unrestricted Total Current Assets Total Assets Audited Numbers Revenues and Support 43.5% 29.8% 20.5% 2.7% $4,436,588 $3,037,733 $2,090,939 $270,664 Government Grants Contributions Special Events Other Revenue Total Revenue $10,200,368 2.3% $231,069 Project Income 1.3% $133,375 Volunteer Services FINANCES: JULY 1, 2014–JUNE 30, 2015 Liabilities and Net Assets Current Liabilities 2014–2015 2013–2014 $721,964 $737,849 721,964 737,849 $4,327,639 3,978,060 Temporary Restricted 410,261 77,159 Permanent Restricted 10,000 10,000 Total Net Assets $4,747,900 4,065,219 Total Liabilities and Net Assets $5,469,864 $4,803,068 Accounts Payable and Accrued Expenses Total Current Liabilities Net Assets Unrestricted Meal Programs Expenditures Meal Programs $8,021,645 84.3% Fundraising $1,057,255 11.1% $438,787 4.6% $9,517,687 100% Management & General Total Expenses Fundraising Management & General If you think your job is cool, chances are it’s not as cool as Richard Johnson’s! Richard is the gatekeeper of the 525 square feet of freezer space at MOWSF. He spends roughly 4 hours a day in temperatures that hover in the range of 10–15 degrees below zero. Every morning, he tells himself, “No job is too big…or too cold.” He moves massive quantities of meat, vegetables, and other frozen food items through the freezer like a professional Tetris player. No challenge is too big, or too cold for Richard. “When a big delivery comes at 2pm, and I’m off work at 3, I’m ready for it!” At the end of the day, Richard is thinking first and foremost about our seniors. “We keep ‘em healthy and we keep ‘em going. For seven years, MOWSF has partnered with Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), an organization that provides assistance to the animal companions of low-income seniors and individuals with disabling illnesses. The partnership has helped many of our homebound seniors maintain the wellbeing of their pets by providing food, litter, basic vet services and more for cats, dogs, birds and even fish. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, MOWSF was awarded a grant from the Banfield Charitable Trust. The three $2,500 gifts have helped kitties like Corny and MOWSF Senior Carmen (pictured) stay happy and healthy in their homes. REV. JOSEPH, 66 MOWSF Client for One Year “I am very grateful for Meals On Wheels” proclaimed Reverend Joseph, a 66 year old Benedictine monk. “I love to cook, but I just can’t stand at the stove safely anymore. As a diabetic, I need to eat three meals a day.” In addition to the meals, Reverend Joseph was one of the first clients to receive a fully stocked emergency preparedness kit. Since moving to the city in 1969, he has experienced his fair share of earthquake scares. “Your electricity and water can be cut out and you’ll be up a tree. These kits will get you over the hump.” This year, MOWSF will distribute kits to all of our clients around the city. 78% of MOWSF seniors live below the Federal Poverty Line.
