Mansfield University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education,
is committed to a policy of affirmative action, and assures an equal opportunity to all persons
regardless of race, color, religion, handicap, ancestry, national origin, age, veteran status, or sex.
Steven Crawford
S
teve Crawford is a 1981 graduate of Mansfield University with a degree in Political
Science. He was a first generation college student and is a native of Millville,
Pennsylvania. Steve is the 2011 recipient of the Elsie Burke Service Award which recognizes
outstanding leadership, loyalty and service to Mansfield University. Steve currently serves as
the Vice Chairman of the Mansfield University Board of Trustees.
Crawford is the Managing Vice President of S. R. Wojdak & Associates, one of the
most prestigious and long standing government relations firms in Pennsylvania. He manages
a staff of 11 government affairs professionals, representing Fortune 500 companies, large
medical institutions and nonprofit arts and cultural institutions. The Motion Picture
Association of America, Microsoft, Drexel, Temple, Scranton and Wilkes Universities, the
American Red Cross, and the Pennsylvania State Police are a representative sample of those
served by the firm.
Crawford joined Wojdak in March of 2011, after a career in public service that spanned 25 years at the highest
levels of state government. He left state government in 2011 after serving as Chief of Staff to the Governor. Crawford
served as the top adviser to the Governor and managed the day-to-day activities of the executive branch of state
government, including 18 cabinet agencies and the Governor’s Office. Prior to that post, Crawford served as the
Governor’s Secretary for Legislative Affairs, having been appointed to that position in January 2003. He was the
top representative for the Governor on all matters relative to the 203 members of the House of Representatives and
the 50 members of the Senate. He directed the legislative relations of the Governor's Office and all agencies of the
Commonwealth.
He was involved in the strategic development, negotiation and final passage of every major issue in state
government for nearly a decade. He earned a reputation as a tough, fair, and frank representative of the executive
branch.
Crawford came to the Governor's Office from the House of Representatives where he served on the executive
staff since 1991. He was the Executive Director of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, Leadership Executive
Director to the Majority Caucus Chairman, and Senior Advisor to the Democratic Caucus. He dealt with a broad
variety of issues such as food safety, nutrition, health care, and economic development.
He previously served in the Administration of Governor Robert P. Casey. As a Deputy Secretary of Agriculture,
he was responsible for all policy development and legislative affairs of the agency. He also managed rural economic
development issues, marketing, and land preservation programs. During his tenure, Pennsylvania established the
nation’s most successful farmland conservation program.
He began his career in legislative relations as a Director of Government Relations for one of the largest trade
associations in the state: the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. There, he dealt with controversial issues including the rewrite of
laws dealing with hazardous chemicals in the workplace, immigration, and tort reform.
Steve is on the Board of Directors for Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children and was a founding board member
and benefactor to Camp Victory, a camp for critically ill children, in his home town of Millville.
Our History
M
ansfield University dates to 1857 when the Mansfield Classical Seminary opened with 105 students.
In 1862 the institution was designated a State Normal School for the training of teachers. Enrollment
had grown to 400 by 1905. In 1927, Mansfield became the first school in Pennsylvania to be designated a State
Teachers College, authorized by the State Board of Education to grant bachelor of science degrees in elementary
and secondary education, music, and home economics. In 1960, the school became Mansfield State College, a
multi-purpose institution offering a broad range of curricula. On July 1, 1983, Mansfield University came into
being as a unit of the State System of Higher Education. Mansfield University has thirty-one active baccalaureate
degree programs, six associate degree programs, and five master’s programs, with a fall 2014 enrollment of 2,587
undergraduates and 165 graduate students, for a total enrollment of 2,752 students.

Our Coin
T
he Mansfield University Graduation Coin was inspired by the President’s Coin for Excellence, and designed
by alumnus Yukta Sagar (Graphic Arts, ’14).
The front of the coin features North Hall, one of the first campus buildings and an
enduring symbol of Mansfield University. The red and black rolling hills are Mansfield
University school colors and symbols of the region. The 15 red and black circles represent
our diversity and the community of students, faculty, staff and alumni who make
Mansfield a special place, as well as the original 15 alumni from the first graduating class.
The back of the coin features our Creed, and the names the University has held. The
diamond in the center echoes the four tenets of the Creed; Character, Scholarship, Service
and Culture. The attached tassel is a recognition of graduates of the institution. Finally, the
rope surrounding the creed is a symbol of the bonds that we all build at Mansfield University
that hold us together well past graduation.
The Student Government Association sponsors a coin for each graduate. SGA also
awards four faculty and staff members, representing the four tenets of the Creed, with
the current year’s coin for their service to Mansfield University students. Graduates and
Alumni can also purchase additional coins for this year, or their year of graduation through
the Mountie Den on campus (beginning in 2015). All proceeds go directly to the H2S NoInterest Loan fund for Mansfield University students.
Honors Program
T
he Honors Program at Mansfield University is a 24-credit, multi-disciplinary academic program featuring
innovative course work, challenging subjects, and opportunities for cultural enrichment in the liberal arts. This
program is designed for students with a strong record of academic achievement and a desire for new learning experiences.
It is open to undergraduates of all majors and designed to provide an intellectually stimulating experience for outstanding
students. The Honors Program enables students to explore subjects that interest them in greater depth than may be possible
in traditional courses, and it also allows students to apply their knowledge across academic fields. It is the goal of the Honors
Program to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to achieve their full potential during their
academic career at Mansfield University.
H
onors students must maintain a 3.00 Q.P.A. in both their honors courses and their overall grade point average as
well as make continual progress in completing the honors sequence of eight courses. The following individuals
have successfully completed the Honors Program this year:
Cassandra R. Fetterman

Academic Attire
The traditional attire worn at Commencement exercises indicate the academic achievement of the
individuals taking part in the ceremony. Its use, which originated at English and European universities during
the twelfth and thirteenth centuries came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of Kings College
(now Columbia University).
In 1895 the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, met at Columbia to
draft a code to regulate the design of gowns and hoods for various degrees and to fix the colors indicating
the various academic disciplines. This code has been adopted by most colleges and universities in the United
States. It was revised in 1932 and again in 1959.
Gowns: The color as well as cut of the gowns varies. Although most doctoral gowns are black, some are
the color of the university conferring the degree. The doctoral gown is trimmed in velvet with three twoinch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in
front. Although usually black, the velvet may be of a color indicating the nature of the degree. Masters’ and
Bachelors’ gowns have no such trim.
The level of degree held is indicated by the cut of the gown. Doctoral gowns have full sleeves which
are round and open. Gowns worn by Bachelors have long pointed sleeves and those worn by Masters have
long, closed fuller sleeves, which reach nearly to the wearer’s knees. The arm goes through a slit giving the
appearance of short sleeves.
Hoods: The hood seems to have had a more practical origin. During the Middle Ages monks wore
hoods to protect their tonsured heads in the winter and as a container to collect alms. It is the most significant
part of academic attire. Its shape and size indicate the degree of the wearer. The color of the velvet border
indicates the academic field. The lining represents the colors of the institution granting the degree. The
Master’s hood is three and one-half feet long and has a three inch border; and the Doctor’s hood is four feet
with a five inch border. The Mansfield University hood is lined with red and black stripes.
Traditional Colors: Representative colors that one often sees are:
Black........................................................................ Associates
Citron............................................Social Science, Social Work
White............................................................. Arts and Letters
Gold......................Science, Computer & Information Science
Pink................................................................................. Music
Light blue..................................................................Education
Apricot.........................................................................Nursing
Drab....................................................Business Administration
Mortarboards: The mortarboard cap evolved from the skull cap worn by monks of the twelfth
and thirteenth centuries. It is usually black. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders;
candidates wear the tassel over the right front quarter.
The Presidential Medallion: In the early 1980’s, a Mansfield State College Commencement
Committee enlisted the expertise of two faculty members to design a presidential medallion and neckpiece in
honor of the institution’s designation effective July 1, 1983 as Mansfield University. Mr. Thomas H. Loomis,
a faculty member in the Art Department, designed and fashioned the metal portion of the medallion using
the Pennsylvania State seal as a base. Mrs. Mary Lee Trowbridge, a faculty member in the Home Economics
Department, designed the neckpiece in red velvet with black stitching. The gold color base of the medallion,
together with the neckpiece highlighting the institutional colors of red and black, symbolize the proud
traditions of the university.
