Restoration and Enlightenment Restoration and Enlightenment A literary technique. Behaviors or instructions are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society. The major difference that sets satire apart from other techniques… HUMOR!!! Satirists use IRONY and EXAGGERATION to poke fun at human faults and foolishness in order to CORRECT human behavior. “The Rape of the Lock” by Alexander Pope (page 1714 of your textbook) Restoration and Enlightenment Horation Satire: Playfully amusing and seeks to correct vice or foolishness with gentle laughter and understanding. Alexander Pope’s satire is Horation Juvenalian Satire: Provokes a darker kind of laughter. It is often bitter and criticizes corruption or incompetence with scorn and outrage. Swift uses this often in Gulliver’s Travels Restoration and Enlightenment The Ending of a Fad Who still used Satire? Popularity of Satire faded in the 19th Century. Lord Byron William Makepeack Thackeray Samuel Butler (England) Mark Twain (America) Satire in the 20th century reacted to warfare and complex social issues. Method: Juvenalian in the extreme Example: George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1945) Animal Farm and Gulliver’s Travels were fantasy satire. Portraying similarities of our world to that of a fantasy world. Often political cartoons with caricatures of leaders and parodies of contemporary issues. Restoration and Enlightenment An element of irony. The contrast between what is expected and what actually happens. Verbal Irony: typical of satirical prose. What is said is not exactly what is meant. EX: “Nice day, isn’t it” being said during a rainstorm. In Jonathon Swifts, A Modest Proposal, Look for irony in his rational arguments. An old man turned ninety-eight He won the lottery and died the next day It's a black fly in your Chardonnay It's a death row pardon two minutes too late And isn't it ironic... don't you think It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought "Well isn't this nice..." And isn't it ironic... don't you think It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you When you think everything's okay and everything's going right And life has a funny way of helping you out when You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up In your face A traffic jam when you're already late A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife It's meeting the man of my dreams And then meeting his beautiful wife And isn't it ironic...don't you think A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think... It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Jne9t8sHpUc In your notes, write down 4 things that are “ironic” based off of the song.
