The purpose of our Wheelchair Challenge is twofold: firstly, to allow the children to experience, albeit for six hours of a school day, what life might be like for people dependent upon wheelchairs every day of their lives. Secondly, we hope to raise at least $600 so that we can donate to Wheelchairs for Kids and purchase four wheelchairs for children in developing countries. Wheelchairs for Kids is a Western Australian organisation that uses retired volunteers to build specially designed wheelchairs for use in developing countries. ‘Every $150 raised gives a child the freedom of mobility and liberates a carer.’ Our Grade 5 and 6 students volunteer to spend a day in the wheelchair and experience some of the difficulties faced by wheelchair-bound people such as gaining access to buildings and toilets, participating in activities, working at their desks, negotiating pathways and keeping up with friends. If you would like to sponsor one of our Grade 5 or 6 students, either speak directly to them and fill out their sponsorship form or send a donation directly to the school. Our students undertaking this challenge are learning to be responsible and caring young leaders. Please support them on their learning journey. Ian Jones Wheelchair Challenge co-ordinator at KGPS Cross Country Results Congratulations to all students who ran the Cross country on Friday morning. It was fantastic to see the children putting in such a huge effort, and the parents emphatically cheering them on. Further congratulations to those who received a place. Well done to all of our under 9’s who completed their 10 minute timed run around the oval. It was fantastic to see some of the older students running around with them in support. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help out on the day, and also to the Grade 5’s who did such a fantastic job of organising the event. Narelle Wain Some electives offered in the past have been; knitting, arts and crafts, foreign languages, jewellerymaking, woodwork, cooking, drama, origami, dance, science experiments, yoga, zumba, computers, filmmaking, sports, lego-building, photography, and bike ed. Grade 5/6 City Excursion On the 5th of the 5th, 2015 the Grade 5’s and 6’s went to the Shrine of Remembrance and Immigration Museum. When we arrived at our destination we explored up the steps to the front of the shrine. We then got welcomed inside the centre by our tour guide. We saw truck-loads of poppies in the entrance, all over the walls. - Bailey …We went and watched a video. In the room that we watched the video everything was red. The video was about teenagers saying how they couldn’t imagine what it would be like going to war. - Fleur … we went to the most sacred part of the shrine. It was the sanctuary and we had a ceremony. There was a rock in the middle of the room and it said GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN – Jed ...we remembered all those that died and served in WWI and WWII. - Nathan …Afterwards we went back down stairs and learnt that soldiers walk up and down slopes in a zig-zag, so that the weight of the pack was not as immense. - Noah …When we got to the bottom of the steps he led us to a statue of Simpson and his donkey. It is a story about a soldier that carried 300 wounded people to the hospital, then on his 25th day he was shot and he died. - Adrianna ...the wall said “LEST WE FORGET” and the walls were in a zig-zag pattern like trenches. The trenches were in a zig-zag pattern because in case one side of the trench was bombed the other end wouldn’t be affected. – Bridget K. …We saw uniforms they used to wear and camo surprisingly was called interrupted pattern. We headed back to the entrance and gave our thanks and respect by placing a poppy into the wall. – Kate …At the Immigration Museum we met Zoe, she took us into the Education Centre and taught us about what immigrants and refugees are. – Amelia R. …we were investigators. We found out about peoples lives and we learnt not to judge people by their looks and how they speak. - Michael In conclusion, I believe the Shrine of Remembrance and the Immigration Museum are lots of fun and there’s lots to learn. I think they are great places to go. - Darcy 5 ELECTIVES PROGRAM GRADE 4-6 TERM 3, 2015 Dear Parents, During Term 3 we are happy to once again offer an electives program for children in grades 4-6.
