Ms. Wemmer received her Bachelor degree in English with honors from the University of Iowa. She earned her Master’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan College in 2006. Ms. Wemmer has been with the district since 2007 beginning her career in the high school as an English teacher. She attained tenure in 2010. Ms. Wemmer has been the high school Student Council advisor since 2009. Her work with this group has really made an impact with her students and the community. The group has made a commitment to community service and runs several clothing and food drives throughout the year. They host an annual Costume Closet in October of each year to help families celebrate Halloween. Student Council, under her guidance, has also become very active with the Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House with events such as the annual “Walk for a Cause” in September. The group collects cleaning supplies and pop tabs which they donate to the Golisano Children’s Hospital. The supplies help at the Ronald McDonald House and the hospital recycles the tabs and the proceeds help fund life-saving treatments. In addition the group is in charge of the much anticipated annual Senior Citizens’ Day. This event has become very popular with both students and seniors! Ms. Wemmer currently serves as the High School English Department Chairperson. Congratulations to Emily Wemmer our 2015 Educator of the Year! On May 18, 2015, the Albion Central School District Board of Education held the seventh annual Academic Convocation Dinner. The guest speaker was 1963 Albion High School graduate, C.W. Lattin. Mr. Lattin grew up in Albion and lives here with his family. He has a Bachelor degree in Art Education from Buffalo State College and taught Art and Technical Drawing at Albion Central School for 10 years. Mr. Lattin became Curator of the Cobblestone Society Museum in Childs where he remained Curator for the next 40 years. Concurrently he also served as the Orleans County Historian recently retiring from that position. Mr. Lattin told several human interest stories presenting students with powerful messages in a humorous manner. The messages ranged from learning from the mistakes of others, treating others in the manner that you would like to be treated and having the courage to stand up and do the right thing. The honored students were introduced individually and personally congratulated by each Board of Education member. Students shared their plans and dreams for the future. The students’ parents were then presented with a special cord signifying academic achievement. The parents placed the honor cord around the neck of their children. The cord will be worn again by students during their graduation ceremony. Academic Honor Students graduating with a cumulative weighted grade point average of 90 percent or higher were: Andrea A. Aman, Drake D. Arnold, Jayne E. Bannister, Nita Bela, Monica J. Benjovsky, Theodore D. Benjovsky, Alex J. Bison, Mallory L. Broda, Adryan L. Cheeseboro, Peiyi Chen, Madyson K. Coville, Amanda S. A Message from the Superintendent… Albion Central celebrated the graduation of 131 students on Fri., June 26, 2015. Though this class is small in number, like the little engine that climbed the hill, “The Little Class that Could” committed themselves to great successes on their path to becoming the newest Purple Eagle Alumni! Despite their size, during their high school years, this class and their schoolmates earned 11 first-place finishes in marching band competitions (including three undefeated seasons); won four first-place finishes in jazz ensemble competitions (including three “Superior” ratings); accumulated more than fifty top NYSSMA, All-County, Area All-State, and Conference AllState recognitions; and added outstanding singing and acting ensemble designations, three outstanding dance ensemble nods, two outstanding musical recognitions, and three Outstanding Student Pit Orchestra awards for their school musical productions from the Rochester Broadway Theater League’s Stars of Tomorrow Program. The list of their accomplishments (or attendance at any one of their performances) makes it easy to understand why ACS was recognized as a “Best Community for Music Education” during each year of their high school years. More than half of the group participated in one or more sports at some point during their high school career. With their teammates they amassed 10 league and six sectional titles in eight different sports. These athletes were truly student-athletes earning statewide scholar athlete honors for carrying a team course average of 90 or greater for 55 of the 68 teams they played on. Nearly half of the graduates earned the Advanced Designation Regents Diploma. Seven committed to serve their country in America’s armed forces and more than 80 percent are headed off to college. More than three-quarters of the class participated in at least one Advanced Placement or Genesee Community College course where they collectively earned 819 college credits– the equivalent of nearly 30 years of full-time college study! To put that into financial perspective, at today’s SUNY cost, they completed more than a quarter of a million dollars of study before they even left high school, and at a cost to their families of about 10 percent of that value. These young adults also committed themselves to others, documenting more than 7,200 hours of community service (though there are many more undocumented hours not in that count). While graduation requires only a 30-hour commitment, 16 graduates logged more than 100 hours, five more than 200 hours, and one topped 350 hours. Their total commitment to their community was the equivalent of 180 40-hour work weeks. The Albion Central community has long been focused on opportunity, providing a tremendous number and variety of opportunities for its youth. The class of 2015 made the most of these opportunities in athletics, arts, alternative programs, advanced and college options. The opportunities available to these graduates and to generations of Albion students earned our high school recognition in the inaugural class of “Schools of Opportunity.” The "Washington Post" newspaper noted “Schools of Opportunity” recognized 10 high schools out of more than 1,000 in New York State and seven more in Colorado (the two states participating in the first year of the program) for their use of “research-based practices to ensure that all students have rich opportunities to succeed." The Post went on to note that these 17 schools may be working against great odds, but that each puts “students, not scores, first.” We are grateful for the community support that allows us to provide these opportunities for our students, grateful that our community has been recognized for doing so, and proud of these students who have taken advantage of these opportunities! I wish the very best for each member of the class of 2015, and look forward to the return of the rest of our students– so that they may use the opportunities available to them to create their own successes. On behalf of the ACS faculty and staff, I wish each of you a safe and enjoyable summer. 2015 Art Show and Crossroads Premiere (L-R): Geneva Bolthouse, Jamelis Mateo, Marella Albanese, Emma Lonnen, Bailey Maier, Katy Perry, Xochitl Rosario, Emma Carr, Stephanie McGee, Carol Pritchard, and Dr. Athena Nichols. The annual premier of the "Crossroads" literary magazine and the Art Club Student Art Show took place on Thu., May 21, in the High School Arts Foyer. This event is a celebration of the creative talents of our high school students and is always the highlight of the school year for art students. The literary magazine publishes both art work and student writings. The students published in this year’s magazine included: Andrea Aman, Savannah Allen, Andrew Ashworth, Nita Bela, Geneva Bolthouse, Aaron Burnside, Matt De Carlo, Mike Laine, Joseph Madejski, Stephanie McGee, Sara Millspaugh, Olivia Neidert, Kellie O’Hearn, Kate Perry, Shaylee Pond, Carol Pritchard, Aliya Rayner, Ryan Reed, Kory Reynolds, Emily Shabazz, Katrina Smith, Bianca Stauffer, Leigha Townsend, Nathaniel Trembley, and Haley Wegman. At the premier, the staff at the high school and members of the art club honored Dr. Athena Nichols with a surprise reception in recognition for achieving her Ph.D. in Education. Dr. Nichols said, “Words do not do my feelings justice. I am grateful and honored by your recognition and I cannot think of a better way to be acknowledged than by my fellow teachers and students who inspire me every day!” Albion HS Alumni Foundation Awards $39,650 in Scholarships Albion Central School Named “School Of Opportunity” The National Education Policy Center (NEPC) at the University of Colorado recently announced that 17 high schools in New York and Colorado are the first to receive the “School of Opportunity” designation. This designation was awarded to these schools based on their demonstration of practices that ensure that all students have opportunities to succeed. The program was piloted in just two states this year, but there are plans to expand this program to all states. Selection criteria are based on a school’s documented success in implementing practices that distinguish the school as committed to closing opportunity gaps. Albion Superintendent, Michael Bonnewell said, “We are very proud of earning a Silver School of Opportunity designation. Albion High School was 1 of 17 out of approximately 700 schools to receive this award. The schools selected demonstrate a range of practices that ensure that all students have rich opportunities to succeed. Our Community as Schools (CAS) program which is hosted by the Villages of Orleans featured prominently in our application. All of the schools recognized have one thing in common; they all put students not test scores first.” The LINK Pictured above are the 2015 Albion High School Alumni Foundation Scholarship recipients. (L-R:) Morgan Seielstad, Brittany Francis, Kellie O’Hearn, and Dominic DiCureia. Albion High School Alumni Foundation takes great pride in making a difference for a lifetime for the Albion Central School District community – alumni, students, teachers and friends. Its claim to fame, so to speak, is the scholarship program. Each year at the Class Night event, the Foundation presents scholarships to graduating seniors who meet the criteria of each specific scholarship. This year, the Foundation awarded 20 scholarships to 28 students totaling: $39,650. These awards provide financial assistance so that Albion’s bright young scholars may continue their educational goals and to be successful in their future endeavors. The funding for the scholarships is made possible through foundation memberships and gifts from AHS Alumni, as well as individuals or organizations that contact the Foundation to establish a scholarship. The Foundation manages the funds and awards the scholarships annually during the Class Night event, along with other scholarships that are awarded that evening. The scholarships that are managed by the Foundation continue to grow. Four new scholarships were added in 2015: The Rex & Marilyn Horton Scholarship, The Wayne A. Burlison Memorial Scholarship, The Glassner Family Scholarship and The John Panek Memorial Scholarship. The Foundation is already working on at least three new awards for 2016: the Ronald Sodoma Scholarship, the Masons Scholarship, and the Archibald Scholarship. The stations represent a wide variety of activities that help students appreciate early American culture. Activities range from doing laundry with a washboard, ironing with a hot cast iron, weaving and making useful everyday items out of tin. Students also got a peek at what school would have been like in pioneer days. Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Rachel Curtin said, “The day provides a reflection of what life was like during Pioneer times and correlates with the New York State fourth-grade social studies standard. It is a great day during which we have many parent volunteers assisting staff and one that the students, faculty and volunteers look forward to.” Cardboard Boat Regatta “Honk” Recognized At Stars of Tomorrow Morgan Seielstad and Matt Flanagan in Boat 1.
