It originated from a cross conducted in 2003 using the variety ‘Britton Lake’ as the female parent and pollen from an unknown male parent. ‘SMCOSS’ was selected in 2009 based on its compact plant growth habit, foliage appearance, foliage spring colour, and red fruit colour. Asexual reproduction of ‘SMCOSS’ by softwood cuttings was first conducted in June 2009 in Grand Haven, Michigan, USA. Tests and Trials: The comparative trial of ‘SMCOSS’ was conducted in an outdoor container trial during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 12 shrubs each of the candidate and reference variety. All shrubs were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter pots in July 2013. Trials were arranged outdoors in rows with 1 metre spacing between the shrubs. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on July 28, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
