NEWS & VIEWS EMPLOYEES, JOBS AND SHOWING APPRECIATION The music industry has earned thousands of dollars using lyrics born from the bounty of feelings we have about our jobs past, present and future. Even though we spend an enormous amount of time at work — often more than we do at home — rarely does a person stay with one employer for life. After all, there were no “until death shall we part” vows in our hiring papers. Most of us know the feeling of going home thinking “I’ve been working like a dog.” The top ten songs about working for a living have lyrics that resonate feelings that each one of us has had at one time or another. Human Resources understands that sometimes a work day can feel like a “dog” day. HR employees work for a living, too! We empathize with the need to hear ‘’good job!” once in a while, to receive credit for successful projects, and to know that we are appreciated. Human Resources works to enhance job satisfaction by improving interpersonal relationships and resolving conflicts. Our Employee Relations office strives to help UCO supervisors acknowledge good performance throughout the year by hosting employee recognition activities and awards. A light brunch and entertainment will be provided before President Betz pre- Across this great country and throughout the world, Americans will pause on November 11th to honor our brave fighting men and women, who for more than 230 years, have underwritten our freedom with their duty, honor, and selfless-service. We recognize that all our veterans have given something of themselves to this country, and some have given all - laying down their lives to defend the freedoms we hold so dear. This Veteran’s Day, as we reflect on the blessings of our liberty, let us be faithful stewards of the freedom we have been granted. Let us never forget that we cannot rightfully celebrate the joy of our freedom without remembering the great price paid for that freedom. We stagger at the eternal debt we owe to the untold number of American Veterans who chose to set aside their personal ambitions and dreams to assure the well-being of our great nation. We, the living, are indeed the beneficiaries of those who made tremendous sacrifices for the advancement and surety of our liberty. May we always be humbly grateful to those brave American patriots who suffered and sacrificed for the glory of God and for the freedom of all Americans. For those Soldiers who have stood guard in peacetime and to those who have seen the terror, the horror and inhumanity of combat – and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice – let it be said that our soldiers have been there for America defending the Constitution of the United States. IRAN HOSTAGE TO SPEA SPEAK K AT UCO Lindsay Houts, University Relations FORMER US AMBASSADOR, IRAN HOSTAGE JOHN LIMBERT TO SPEAK AT UCO The University of Central Oklahoma will host a presentation and questionand-answer session with former U.S. ambassador and Iran hostage John W. Limbert, Ph.D., from 5:30-7 p.m. Nov. 4 in Ballroom C of the Nigh University Center (NUC) on Central’s campus. Limbert was one of 52 American hostages held for 444 days beginning in November 1979 in Tehran, Iran, during the country’s Islamic Revolution. Limbert’s “Iran and America: Endless Enemies?” presentation will examine both the history and future of U.S.- Iran relations. “As world events and conversations continue to center on the Middle East, it is imperative that we engage with the academic and diplomatic communities that have firsthand knowledge of the complex issues and realities of the region,” said Jarrett Jobe, Ph.D., executive director of UCO’s Leadership Central. “Dr. Limbert possesses both academic and practical knowledge of the region. His visit will provide an opportunity for our university community to hear his insights and thoughts on American-Iranian relations for the future,” Jobe added. Now a professor of history and political science at the U.S. Naval Academy, Limbert’s 34-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service began in 1973 and included posts in Algeria, Djibouti, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates. Limbert served in a variety of roles, including as Deputy Coordinator for Counterterrorism in the U.S. State Department, president of the American Foreign Service Association, U.S. Ambassador to Mauritania and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iran in the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. Before joining the Foreign Service, Limbert taught in Iran, both as a Peace Corps Volunteer and as an English instructor at Shiraz University. HEALTH AND WELLNESS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON The Holiday Season is filled with wonderful foods and tasty treats, sipping hot chocolate by the fire, and family time sitting around the living room catching up and reminiscing about memories. Overall, it is a wonderful time of year. However, with the average Thanksgiving meal topping 4,500 calories, this is when many Americans find themselves adding a few pounds for the winter. Here are some tips for battling the weight gain during the Holiday Season: 1. Eat healthy snacks before holiday meals – Try grabbing some fruit or raw vegetables before eating your holiday meal. It can help you to eat less of the foods that maybe aren’t as healthy. 2. Smaller Plate – Use smaller plates to encourage smaller portions. 3. Dessert Portions – Holiday time usually brings many tasty treats including desserts. Cut smaller pieces of pie and have smaller portions. By the time we get to dessert during the holidays, we are often already full. You won’t miss those extra few bites. 4. Treat Control – Candies and baked goods are everywhere at this time of year. Don’t deprive yourself completely, however be smart and try to stick to just one or two. 5. Avoid Drinking Calories – Hot Chocolate is a great winter time treat, but can be very calorie dense. The same with specialty drinks from coffee shops. Look up the nutrition facts before ordering. Small changes like no whip, non-fat or soy milk, and ordering a smaller size can take away calories. Watch your alcohol consumption as well, we often overlook these calories. 6. Stay Active – Make a promise to yourself to be active during the Holiday Season. Instead of sitting around the living room talking (while snacking on Grandma’s homemade candy), go for a walk with your family!
