This program takes the young men out of their comfort zone and opens up their world males by reclaiming, renaming, renewing and reconditioning their minds. We strive perspectives, guiding their development to the leaders they were born to be. Chionesu Bakari boasts a 100% high school graduation to motivate young black male children to rate, with 92% of those young men currently enrolled in colleges/ think critically and prepare their minds and universities across the country and 7 college/university graduates.* the minds of their respective parents/guardians for the men they will grow to become. HISTORY Chionesu Bakari rose out of the desire to combat the societal challeng- What WE DO es that impact young men, externally and internally. Founder and Executive Director, Horace L. Moore recognized the problems confronting Chionesu Bakari is a year round mentoring and personal development and Rites of Passage program, offering services to young men between the ages of 8 through 18 years. The program provides hope in an en- young black men were too complex to succumb to a single solution, so he along with the talents of the initial staff started a summer program based on wholistic principles of parent involvement, male led mentoring, both group and one-on-one mentoring, and education based vironment that is a safe haven for the young men and is broadening trips. Foundational components of the program include committed to teaching and empowering them with values such as life skills, leadership, teamwork, brotherhood, responsibility, integrity, respect, ownership, accountability and compassion as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. Fall Program: October - June Program meets bi-weekly: Friday - 6:00pm - 9:00pm; Saturday - 9:45am - 3:00pm. Summer Program: July - August Six week program beginning the first week in July and ending in mid-August. Program meets daily: Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Parents Chionesu Bakari also includes a parent/guardian component to the program, in which the values and teachings of the program are reinforced through bi-weekly workshops and seminars and a yearly retreat. This critical component provides parents the necessary “tools” to parent their developing sons. uniforms and deliberately referring to participants as “Young Men.” These basic aspects of the program provide positive reinforcement and a sense of belonging, -”A Brotherhood.” Due to the success of the summer program in 2006, Chionesu Bakari was extended to year-round programming, including external advocacy for the young men in their schools and families. Categories were also formed to foster brotherhood in smaller groups; Pauper, Warriors, WORKSHOPS Financial Readiness Conflict Mediation Law Enforcement Awareness Bible Study Education & Career Development Princes and the Rites of Passage; along with Big Brother/Little Broth- Sexual Education er mentoring. Chionesu Bakari’s unique mentoring approach ensures Health Awareness that all young men have two or more male mentors. With over 9 years in service, we have positively impacted and expanded the world view of over 200 young men. The program has visited over 23 states and Canada, taken over 50 college/university tours and journeyed to every major Civil Rights historical landmark. We are transforming the lives of young men! We proudly boast, the majority of our over 40 CB Alums are in colleges/universities introduced to them from our CB trips. As testament, our committed CB Parents & Alums giving back yearly speak to the proof of our impact.
