Philanthropy. Learning. Community. Westlake Chapter ________________________________________________________________________ IN SUPPORT OF BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY VOL. IX NO. 1 AUTUMN/WINTER If you have been reading my column in past bulletins, you know I try to start or end with a quote. Looking back I remembered a few that got us through the early days. In the beginning our answer for any bump in the road was: “Baby steps, just baby steps.” As we grew we came to the realization that the successes of our chapter began with the following: “Feed them and they will come.” Now as we embark on our 9th year, we will challenge ourselves with living the quote I came upon while my fingers ran across the keys of my computer: Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success. The President’s Message By Zelda Krodman Inside this issue: Bits & Pieces….p.3 Community Outreach/ Social Justice….p.4 Membership….p.5 Photo Gallery….p.6 Membership form….p.7 Tributes ….p.10 After attending our New Member Tea on July 28th, I came away with a new sense of the meaning of teamwork as I observed the flow of ideas emanate from women who met each other for the very first time. The feeling was that we will continue to grow, learn, create opportunities and develop friendships. Please participate. Offer us your expertise and your talents. With YOU we are a TEAM. Here’s to multiplying our successes TOGETHER. Carolle credited the success of the event to her hard working team members Michele Feldman (Co Chair) and Linda Levin. “The work they did on this from Day One made the evening what it was – flawless (except for the loss of the electric power!)”. Judy has been a member of the Study Group Committee for several years and has facilitated many Study Groups. To those of you who were at our Capture the Flag event, you know how fabulous it was. For those of you who missed it, you really MISSED IT.... it was the best party around! Thanks to those who either baked or contributed to the sumptuous dessert and goodies table. It was outstanding and abundant. As one of the guests commented, "This was the best Vietnamese table ever!" The winners (pictured above) were thrilled and the booby prize winners were just as happy with their 'loss'. Our really hard working committee outdid themselves... Kudos galore to Carolle Weiner, Michele Feldman and Linda Levin for their 'over the top' contribution to a most successful evening. They deserve some R & R and then on to the planning of the next one! - Zelda 3 COMMUNITY OUTREACH – Charna Phillips & Violet Vietoris THANK YOU! Charna and Violet wish to thank everyone who donated school supplies to our Back to School project. These school supplies aided the MOMS of Jackson in their efforts to help struggling families get their children ready for the new school year. The school supplies pictured here are only a small portion of what was donated. Your generosity was overwhelming! SOCIAL JUSTICE – Elene Kurtzman THANK YOU! The Social Justice Committee wants to say” thank you” to those members who made birthday boxes and filled them with small gifts for the boys and girls who are staying at Dottie’s House with their moms. Dottie’s House is a local shelter for abused women and their children. It is hoped that these gifts will help bring some joy to these children. Thank you to the following volunteers for making these birthday boxes: Helene Abramowitz Myra Abramowitz Rochelle Blum Beverly Brown Beverly Gursky Georgine Davis Dolores Decker Temi DeFeo Helene Franco Rita Green Phyllis Guberman Laura Kohn Lenore Lawner Marilyn Liebman Marilyn Prudenti Linda Shimony Karen Schuman Sheila Sokoloff Rona Stein Rose Marie Spingler Mary Ann Voegeli Elaine Weinstock Marian Lipson Helene Gulkis THANK YOU! Both women are the former membership VPs. All Board and new members present introduced themselves and shared ideas and information pertaining to Brandeis. Zelda encouraged new members to get involved, and all seemed eager to join study groups and participate in the various activities that Brandeis offers. Delicious refreshments and interesting conversations were enjoyed by all. MEET OUR MEMBERS! Janis Bell Janis moved to Westlake from Caldwell, NJ about four years ago. She just recently retired from the Diocese of Trenton where she coordinated ministry for maturing adults and was an advocate for persons with disabilities. Janis loves everything about Westlake and wants to meet people, so she feels that Brandeis is just what she would enjoy in addition to her children and seven grandkids! Welcome, Janis! Sheila Sokoloff What a pleasure to introduce Sheila Sokoloff to you, one of our newer members of Brandeis! Sheila is a new retiree of one year, having spent more than twenty years working with pre-school and kindergarten children in Marlboro. Like so many of our members, she found that Brandeis offered her such a diversified range of activities, that she has already experienced book and film discussions, the Ethicist group, took a bus trip to Atlantic City, and of course was with us at our “Meet and Greet” brunch and “ Welcome Tea.” In addition to our activities, Sheila was impressed with how welcoming and friendly everyone was towards her. Although a new member, she may be looking to become involved in one of our committees in the future. I know she will be one of our welcoming members to others, sharing her positive experiences forward. 5 OUR NEW MEMBERS 2014-2015 Janis Bell Rhea Borofsky Marie Boudreau Abbe Cocuzza Rita Curven Georgine Davis Delores Decker Susan Diston Judith Jewell Rita Lipnick Mary Jo McCarthy Ruth Melon Ann Porzio Myrna Reich Gail Sender Sheila Sokoloff Enid Stone Gwen Strauss Roberta Stupp Rita Vikki Phyllis Woloshin Interested in becoming a member or renewing your membership? Using modern technology and old-fashioned investigative techniques, sometimes with only a photograph and a vague location to guide them, the Vietnamese lawyer and his team of activists search for children and women forced into modern-day slavery. In 2013 alone, Van Ta and his team traveled to China on seven rescue missions, freeing 13 girls and women who had been sold into prostitution. Phillip Martin, senior fellow at Brandeis’ Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism, met Van Ta when Martin wrote a series of award-winning investigative pieces about human trafficking for WGBH Boston Public Radio. In Brandeis Magazine, Martin described the dark nights when Van Ta drove the streets of Ho Chi Minh City to find children who have been trapped by garment factory owners. MARGO HOWARD '62 In 1959, a woman in Chicago learned a St. Louis newspaper was about to print something she had penned about love. She wrote her daughter, a Brandeis freshman, to tell her the good news. The woman was Eppie Lederer, and the paper in question was merely the latest in the growing list of dailies to publish her “Ann Landers” advice column, which she started writing in 1955. Through nature or nurture, or both, Lederer’s daughter, Margo Howard, became something of an expert on love herself. After working as a newspaper and magazine writer for 30 years, at age 58 she followed in the advice-giving footsteps of her mother (and her mother’s twin, Pauline “Dear Abby” Phillips) by writing the nationally syndicated columns “Dear Prudence” for Slate, then “Dear Margo” for Yahoo! News and www.wowowow.com. Through the years, Lederer has been married four times and currently lives in Cambridge, Mass. with her fourth husband. She’s also preparing for the lateSeptember release of her third book, “Eat, Drink and Remarry: Confessions of a Serial Wife.” Do you know a member that is ill, lost a loved one or has good news to share? Please let us know!! Contact a Board member or call Lynne Schneiderman, our Corresponding Secretary. Lynne can be reached at (732) 534-0084 or email her at [email protected] 8 MISSION STATEMENT Brandeis National Committee is dedicated to providing philanthropic support to Brandeis University, a distinguished liberal arts and research university founded by the American Jewish Community. Its membership is connected to the University through fund raising and through activities that reflect the values on which the University was founded: academic excellence, social justice, non-sectarianism and service to the community. . Say: Did you know that Alzheimer's disease alone affects 15 million people worldwide? Maybe you or a family member or friend is one of those people. As the population ages and this number increases, the need for neurological and neurodegenerative disease research becomes increasingly important. Brandeis University researchers in over 50 laboratories are already pioneering strides in the field of brain-related disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and Autism. Scientists in the areas of neurodevelopment, neurodevelopment disorders and neurodegeneration are trying to understand the fundamental biological processes underlying brain function. These Brandeis professors and students are dedicated to the basic research that has already led to breakthroughs in our understanding of neurological diseases. Educating tomorrow's scientists is important; that's why investing in scientific research and scholarships at Brandeis is an investment in the future. Plus Brandeis is committed to ensuring that it meets the financial needs of students doing outstanding work in science's fastest-growing arena. We invite you to join the Brandeis National Committee's "Sustaining the Mind: Scientific Research Campaign" to establish an important fund to foster research in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases. The vision and determination of a cadre of loyal supporters like you will help us reach our $3 million campaign goal and will ensure that Brandeis researchers and students are able to excel in their fields of study and make important advancements in neuroscience. Thank you! Happy Birthday! Happy Anniversary! Congratulations! Get Well! Express Sympathy. You may make your donation by way of a lovely card which will be sent out by Lynne Schneiderman.
