DAN985I
Double COUNTER / RATEMETER for 4/20 mA Signals
The DAN985I is a particular version of the double unit
DAN984 wiht function Counter / Ratemeter. The input
signal from 4 to 20 mA reaching the DAN985I is
integrated and a new frequency signal is generated
from 0 to 2500 impulses/second proportional to the 0/
10 Vdc signal. With the new impulses/second signal,
the instrument works as a standard ratemeter /
counter , for applications in flow measuring, at
instantaneous and accumulated flow measuring.
The DAN985I is a 6 digit panel meter, with 2 internal
instruments, named «A» and «B». Only one of the
internal instruments («A» or «B») can be visualized on
the display. The internal instrument which is not being
visualized, is still working normally, and its value can
be visualized by acting on the instrument controls in
order to switch between instruments «A» and «B».
Instruments «A» and «B» are by default configured for
«A» acting as a ratemeter (display proportional to the
impulses/second arriving to the instrument) and «B»
acting as a counter (display proportional to the
number of impulses received since the last reset).
Additionaly, instrument «A» can be configured as a
counter instead of ratemeter, being the whole
DAN984 instrument a COUNTER/COUNTER unit.
The DAN985I has 2 signal inputs for impulses, named
«INPUT1» and «INPUT2». By default, instruments
«A» and «B» receive impulses from «INPUT1», and
«INPUT2» is by default configured as an inhibit control. «INPUT2» can be also configured to act as a
second input for applications with bidirectional
encoders, or to control the add/substract function, for
example.
The DAN985I instrument is configured with codes.
These codes activate specific functions, and the
codes and values are listed in this manual, together
with the procedure to activate them from the frontpanel
of the instrument.
The RATEMETER instrument (internal instrument
«A») displays INSTANTANEOUS FLOW, and the
COUNTER instrument (internal instrument «B») is the
display for ACCUMULATED flow.

5.- Introducing DAN985I configuration
The programming codes for the DAN985I are composed of 2 digits and a value asigned to the code. For example,
code «46» controls the decimal point position for instrument «B», and its default value is «1» (no decimal points).
This programming code is named as «46 1E». The «46 3E» code activates decimal point on instrument «B»
at position «XXXX.XX». The «E» at the end of the code means that code «46 3E» needs to be validated («E»)
in order to activate. A description follows on how to activate code «46 3E» :
Press PS until number «4» is selected
Press PE to validate
Number «4» displays
4
Press PS until number «6» is selected
Press PE to validate
Number «6» displays
46 1
Note .- together with code «46» appears the value «1» (total «46 1») indicating that code «46» has a value of «1»
Press PS until number «3» is selected
Press PE to validate.
Number «3» substitutes «1»
46 3
Press PS until number «E» is selected
Press PE to validate
Instrument activates decimal point
XXXX . XX
IMPORTANT .- After 6 seconds without programming, the instrument rolls-back and cancels the ongoing programmation
Some of the programming codes for the DAN985I are made of only 1 digit, which is the case for codes «1»,
«2» and «3», controlling setpoints for alarms «AL1» and «AL2», and the «Multiplication Factor» of the
instruments «A» and «B». When introducing code «1», the display shows a 6 digit value, which is the current
value for «AL1». To modify each one of the 6 digits, select one of the numbers «1» to «6» and press PE until
you get on display the desired alarm value. To validate, select «E» and press PE.
MULTIPLICATION FACTORS .- By default, the instrument is made of several multiplication factors, all with a
value of x1, which multiply the received signal before display. The counter and the ratemeter display by default
the actual impulses/second and the total impulses since the last reset. These values can be multiplied in order
to modify (scale) the value displayed. The multiplication factors are activated with the programming codes. There
are multiplicators common to both instruments («A» and «B») and mutliplicators that only affect one of the
instruments.

25.- Programming Example
Working with a flowmeter offering a 4/20 mA signal with a maximum flow of 100 liters/hour. We want to connect
the output of the flowmeter to the DAN985I instrument in order to display the instantaneous flow in liters/hour and
the accumulated flow in liters.
1 .- General Configuration
«A» = Ratemer (Instantaneous flow)
«B» = Counter (Accumulated Flow)
code «41 1E»
2.- Ratemeter Configuration
4 mA =
0 impulses / second = 0 liters / hour
20 mA = 2500 impulses / second = 100 liters / hour
we need to configure an input from 0 to 2500 imp/sec. with a display of 0 to 100 liters/hour
2500 x MULTIPLICATOR = 100
MULTIPLICATOR = 100 / 2500 = 0.0400
The programming codes for the Ratemeter will be :
Scale Factor = 0.0400
code «3» with a value of 0.0400
3.- Counter Configuration
Look for the addition to the display for a single impulse received
2500 imp./sec. = 100 liters/hour x 1 hour/3600 sec. = 0.027777 liters/sec.
2500 imp. = 0.027777 liters
1 imp. = 0.000011111 liters = 0.0111 X 0.001
we need to programm the Counter wit the following codes :
Scale Factor = 0.0111
Multiplication Factor = x 0.001
code «3» with a value of 0.0111
code «45 4E»
NOTES .- Note that once the overall multiplication factor has been calculated (both in the ratemeter and in the
counter) we split the value in 2 parts, in order to use the decimals of the Scale Facto r«3», which can have value
between 0.0000 and 5.9999.

28.- Limitations on the internal Counter
The DAN985I instrument is made of an internal counter with 23 bits, plus 1 bit for the sign. In total there are
24 bits for the impulse codification, with a maximum internal counting of 8.388.608 impulses (more than 8 million
impulses). Once this value has been achieved, the effect on display is the activation of the negative sign and
the counting in SUBSTRACT mode for the COUNTERS.
In case of finding this situation, press the RESET and the counters will recover functionality
Also «AL2» can be programmed in order to release a RESET automatically when reaching the value
programmed, without need of a manual RESET (code «56 5E»).

operators. The unit has not power switch, and the
unit has not internal protection fuse, and will start operation as
soon as power is connected. The installation must incorporate an
external main switch with a protection fuse of :
fuse 50 mA (at 230 Vac power)
Also the necessary devices to protect the operator and the process
when using the unit to control a machine or process where injury to
personnel or damage to equipment or process, may occur as a result
of failure of the unit.
SAFETY PRESCRIPTIONS.- The unit has been designed and tested
under UNE 20553 rules and is delivered in good condition.
This manual contains information for electrical connections.
Do not make wiring signal changes or connections when
power is applied to the unit. Make signal connections before
power is applied and, is reconnection is required, disconnect the AC
(mains) power before such wiring is attempted. Install the unit in
places with a good ventilation to avoid the excessive heating. And far
from electrical noise source or magnetic field generators such as
power relays, electrical motors, speed controls etc... The unit cannot
be installed in open places. Do not use until the installation is finished.
POWER SUPPLY.- The power supply must be connected to the
adequate terminals (see the connection instructions). The characteristics of the power supply are written on the attached label. Please
make sure that the unit is correctly connected to a power supply of
the correct voltage and frequency. Do not use other power supply
otherwise permanent damage may be caused to the unit. Do not
connect the unit to power sources heavily loaded or to circuits which
power loads in cycle ON-OFF or to circuits which power inductive
loads.
SIGNAL WIRING.- Certain considerations must be given when install
the signal input and control wires. Long wires can act like antennas
and introduce electrical noise to the unit, therefore :
A.- Do not install the signal input or control wires in the same
conduit with power lines, heaters, solenoids, SCR controls etc....and
always far from these elements.
B.- When shielded wires are used, connect the shield to the
common terminal and leave unconnected the other end of the shield
and do not connect to the machine ground.
EXCITATION VOLTAGE.- The unit supplies excitation voltage for sensors, at the terminals 3 and
4. Do not connect these terminals to other external
power supply, permanent damages may result to
the unit.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS .- Before starting any operation of
adjustment, replacement, maintenance or repair, the unit must be
disconnected from the power supply. Keep the unit clean , to assure
good functioning and performance. To prevent electrical or fire
hazard, do not expose the unit to excessive moisture. Do not operate
the unit in the presence of flammable gases or fumes, such as
environment constitutes a definite safety hazard. The unit is designed to be mounted in a metal panel.
If the unit shows signs of damage, or is not able to show the expected
measures, or has been stored in a bad conditions or a protection
failure can occur, then do not attempt to operate and keep the unit
out of service.
IN CASE OF FIRE
1.- Disconnect the unit from the power supply.
2.- Give the alarm according to the local rules.
3.- Switch off all the air conditioning devices.
4.- Attack the fire with carbonic snow, do not use
water in any case.
WARNING : In closed areas do not use systems with vaporized liquids.
CONNECTIONS
All wiring connections are made using push-in cable connectors.
There is a separate connector block for power supply, input signals
and each relay output. Please make sure that each connector block
is connected on the adequate place.
PANEL MOUNTING.- The instrument size case is 1/8 DIN. The
internal electronic circuit can be inserted or removed by the front part
and is held on to the case by the two lateral lugs, which must be put
in their corresponding holes placed on each case side. Verify that
the panel cut-out is correctly according to the dimensions indicated
with a minimum depth of 135 mm. (5.31"). Install the fixation clips of
blue colour in the lateral guides of the unit by its rear part and then
slide and press them firmly against the panel, until the unit is totally
hold on.
