Masterclass: Sound, Body, Space A week’s intensive studio-based program for dancers, dancemakers and other practitioners engaged with movement and performance. A creative forum to explore improvisational practices and how the body responds to sound, space and other stimuli. 22-26 July 2013 11:30am — 5.30pm daily Chunky Move: Studio 1, 111 Sturt Street, Southbank Limited places only. APPLICATIONS CLOSE FRIDAY 12 JULY. “BalletLab is a provocative outstanding company in the upper league of Australian contemporary dance.” The Australian Review “It’s massively brave dance making” John Bailey (Capital Idea, blog) “A peculiar dynamic of compelling coerciveness” Carl Nilsson-Polias, RealTime. “Performance like no other” Marco Ruiz, Couturing.com Sound, Body, Space is the focus of our annual Phillip Adams BalletLab Masterclass in 2013. Led by Brooke Stamp and Deanne Butterworth, this week long intensive offers a valuable professional experience in a studio setting for emerging professional dancers, dance-makers and other practitioners engaged with movement and performance. It will be a creative forum to explore movement, the body and improvisational practices triggered by stimuli as a basis towards new work development. Working equally with Deanne and Brooke, this is an opportunity to learn from and work with two leading figures in Melbourne contemporary dance, drawing on their recent collaboration in PABL’s And All Things Return to Nature Tomorrow, choreographed by Brooke Stamp and Phillip Adams. Sessions with Brooke will explore movement and improvisation triggered by documentary practices and other stimuli. Looking at both work and process that responds to other forms including sound, writing, drawing and text, these sessions will utilise and extend the experimental techniques that fed into her recent work And All Things Return to Nature. Deanne delves into the way different spaces affect the choices we make and what we devise with our bodies. This is considered three ways: an investigation of pre-existing spaces in proximity to Chunky Move; how sound can be a deeply physical environment; and thirdly, participants will use drawings, plans, physical structures and self-devised environments as the basis for scores for creating movement. The week will end with an informal showing of our discoveries for participants, friends and colleagues, followed by drinks and conversation.
