Challenge Problem Set 12

CHEM 1A: Challenge Problem Set 12
1. Balance the redox reaction below under acidic conditions:
IO3- + H2C2O4 ---> I2 + CO2
Based on the properly balanced redox reaction, what is the stoichiometric coefficient of the oxalic acid
(H2C2O4)?
2. Consider the balanced redox reaction you formulated in the previous problem. If 2.291 g of oxalic acid
reacts according to reaction, what volume of carbon dioxide gas (in mL) would be generated at 25 oC &
750 torr? Be sure to report the proper number of significant figures.
3. A bottle of beer can be carbonated by adding "priming sugar" (C6H12O6) that then ferments in the
bottle according to the reaction below:
C6H12O6(aq) ----> 2 CO2(g) + 2 CH3CH2OH(aq)
For proper carbonation of a 12 ounce bottle, approximately 1100 mL of carbon dioxide gas (assuming
1.00 atm pressure) should be generated from this fermentation. How much priming sugar should be
added (in grams) to carbonate roughly 50 twelve ounce bottles?
Assume the gas is generated at 66 oF.
