General Education Flexible Communications COURSE DETAILS Aims To achieve National Qualifications in Communication (4) and Literature 1 (standard alternative to Higher English at 'C' grade for teacher training courses at university) to prepare for future courses. Start times The course is split into 2 teaching sessions of approximately 16 weeks with enrolment taking place in either August or January. Demand is high therefore applications should be made as early as possible. Although the course is flexible and informal, you must be formally enrolled as a student to gain certification. Meetings Tuesday evenings as required, in the form of individual 20 minute appointments between 4.30pm – 7pm. Coursework Much coursework is carried out at your pace and in your own time (though some outcomes will be carried out under controlled conditions in college, as your tutor advises). Communication (4) This unit, FA1W 12, is now formally called Communication, though it has typically been known as Communication 4. It consists of 4 outcomes in Literature 1 reading (two newspaper articles with questions) writing (two exercises, possibly essay and project) listening (two exercises based on demanding documentaries) talking (a formal presentation and group discussion or interview) This unit, FA58 12, requires two literature essays on the following texts: Two pieces of poetry by Carol Anne Duffy : Havisham and Valentine The short story A Time to Dance by Bernard MacLaverty and answers to questions on a previously unseen piece of poetry Accreditation of Prior Learning Certified work from previous courses (for example, talks assessed by a university tutor) may exempt you from particular outcomes in Communication. Your Flexible Communications tutor will advise. Entry criteria A minimum of Intermediate 2 English or the equivalent. As the course depends on considerable work at home, it is not suitable for students requiring help with literacy skills, who should approach our Student Support Base instead. If applying for teacher training courses, it is essential that you contact an admissions tutor at your chosen university to ensure that Communication 4 and Literature 1 will be acceptable as an alternative to Higher English.
