Column addition, decomposition subtraction, short and long multiplication and division will be taught, together with activities to enable children to develop their number reasoning skills. A wide range of measures knowledge and skills will be taught, including practical application of skills through activities such as planning, costing, baking and accounting tasks for the Macmillan Coffee Morning, which children will host on September 30th. Details about this event will be sent in due course. Learning will include the adaptation of recipe amounts to encompass ratio and proportion skills. Children will also be taught how to interpret and draw their own line graphs and pie chart, and how to display information in the most appropriate way. They will also be taught how to read a wide variety of timetables. Geometry lessons will include knowledge of the properties of shape including finding the area of triangles, circles and parallelograms. Literacy. Children will begin to extend their literacy skills with a focus on drafting, editing and producing a final polished Narrative/ piece of high quality work. They will begin their literacy with a recount of an event from their summer holiday, Poetry/Nonfollowed by a research project after which they will write a speech designed to persuade people to support a Fiction charity (this will be Macmillan and will link with the children organising and running a Coffee Morning on 30th September). The third piece of writing will link with our science topic on living things and their habitats, and children will write a descriptive text based on an imaginary animal and its habitat. Children will learn to write balanced arguments on topics of interest, and this will be followed by a narrative unit based on our history topic (World War II) and the film Goodnight Mr Tom along with letters home from evacuees. Our science learning for the first half term is Living things and their habitats. Children will revise previous work on Science. habitats and interdependence, then will extend their knowledge and learn about life cycles examining the life cycle of an insect, a mammal, an amphibian and a plant. Children will then learn about Carl Linnaeus and his classification system. They will learn how different animals are classified and named, and the characteristics of each group. During the second half term, children will learn about how we see things in our topic on light, followed by a short topic on electricity, in which they will learn to make electrical circuits and apply their skills by making a model reindeer with a flashing nose or a nativity scene complete with star in Design Technology. History Our History topic is to study an aspect of British history extending chronological knowledge beyond 1066, and we have chosen to study World War II, which is a popular topic and one that the children always enjoy. Children will begin their work with a timeline of the ages of British history, such as Stone Age, Victorians and so on to give an overview of our history, followed by a timeline of important events such as the Great Fire of London and the Great Plague. They will then research the key events of World War II and study specific events such as the Blitz and the evacuation of children from London to the countryside. In order to help children to understand the importance of this period of history, we will visit Kelham Island in Sheffield to experience a World War II Workshop for the day on October 11th. Children and staff will dress in the costume of the period and will take a ‘ration’ packed lunch. Further details will be sent out nearer the date. We will study Goodnight Mr Tom in literacy to further consolidate understanding and are hoping to take the children to the theatre if the play is being performed locally. Geography Children need to learn about the map of the world together with key areas such as the equator, polar regions and the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. They will look at the geography of World War II and note changes from the maps of that period to the maps of today. RE Year 5/6 will study journeys to special places in both the Christian faith (the Christmas story and pilgrimages to special places) and that of Islamic Hajj. They will be able to study the similarities and differences of the faiths. PE Computing. Music Charanga Art and Design REAL PE Scheme of work. ICT/Computing will be taught in a cross-curricular way throughout the year. Our music during the autumn term will be a mixture of modern and traditional songs. Artwork will be based on the history topic, and design technology will link with the science topic.
