E v o l u t I o n OF L I O N By: Anonymous S How are lions similar & different from other cats? SAME Different •Lions and other big cats are endangered species •most cat species [except perhaps the house cat] are slowly becoming extinct. •Most are over hunted for their fur. •Many subspecies are found throughout the feline species. •Stalks prey then attacks. •From all the roaring and growling and ferociousness lions are family animals and very social in their own communities. •They live in 15 or more in prides •When a new male lion becomes the leader of the pride it is not unusual for him to kill all the cubs within the pride •Other feline wait un till dark to hunt when the lion hunts anytime a day. •Some like water like tigers. •The female lion carries her babies for 100-119 days. Depending on the habitat of the lion they ill often hide their new born. Most females lions abandon their pride and deliver their babies. •The number of cubs born depends on the age and diet of the mother. The litter size is 1 to 4 lion cubs. The pride of lions reproduce at the same time. •Cubs reach sexual maturity at 24 to 28 months in captivity and at 36 to 46 months in the wild. The difference here is one of nutrition. Overall cub mortality rates are high. In the wild as many as 80% die before they are 2 years old. Because the cubs are not able to compete with larger ones during feeding, some of them starve. Even in times of abundance cubs may starve if all the kills are small. The Saber-tooth tiger •1 million years ago •during ice age period. •Scientific name genus smildon. •Had large teeth which gave the name sabertooth. Tiger •Tigers have many subspecies. •They are still around to day. •Scientific name: Panthera Tigris •Fossil show that the lion appeared more recently than the other Pantheras. •records date back to around 750,000 years ago •stem from Western Africa. From here lions spread north into Asia and Europe •Cave lion (Panthera spelaea) and Tuscany lion were found in the Balkans and Northern Italy •The ancestral lion also crossed from Asia into north America and the American lion (Panthera atrox) spread south as far as Peru.
