During the second half of 2016, the total volume of fish landings amounted to
1.4 million kilograms with a wholesale value of €5.0 million.
Fish Landings: July-December 2016
The volume of fish landings amounted to 1.4 million kilograms during the period under review. The
main species landed were mackerel, dorado and swordfish which accounted for 53.2 per cent of the
total landings.
From 2016 onwards, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture carried out more enforcement
on the fishermen to declare all the fish sales including the direct sales. This had an impact on the
declaration of fish landings.
Regional overview
Maltese fishermen landed 1.2 million kilograms, which accounted for 85.8 per cent of total landings and
87.0 per cent of the wholesale value. As regards to volume, the main species landed were mackerel,
dorado and swordfish which made up 50.5 per cent of the landings.
In terms of volume, landings by Gozitan fishermen comprised 14.2 per cent of the total landings. The
wholesale value amounted to €653,463 or 13.0 per cent of the total value


Methodological Notes
1.
Statistical data for fish landings are collected through the daily returns of sales submitted by fishermen at
the fish market and directly by themselves.
2.
From 2016 onwards, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture carried out more enforcement on the
fishermen to declare all the fish sales including the direct sales. This resulted in a break in time-series.

The information is submitted to the NSO on a monthly basis by the Department of Fisheries and
Aquaculture. Data on fish landings by species, volume, average monthly unit prices and total value paid out
to fishermen are used in this compilation.
