Language Arts
Math
This is the second week students have their new groups.
They did a great job-keep studying!
This week we are continuing with work on elapsed time.
Students need to be able to show elapsed time on a
number line. We are also beginning measurement in the
metric system. Students will need to know if they
would use grams or kilograms to measure objects and
we will study liters and milliliters, perimeter and area.
In small group rotations, students are working skills
such as main idea and details, context clues and story
elements.
In vocabulary students are working with the suffix –ful
meaning “full of.” Students decoded words such as
beautiful, hopeful, thankful etc.
Ask your child which book they are reading and what it’s
about. Also ask them what genre it is!
Please continue to have your child read AR books at
night! They need to read 8 chapter/nonfiction books
for second trimester. They also need to earn 80% or
higher on the AR test for them to count toward their
goal.
Students should be able to say:
I can achieve 80% or higher on my spelling tests.
I can achieve 80% or higher on my AR tests.
I can make an inference while reading.
I can ask questions while reading.
I can find the main idea of a text.
I can use context clues to help me find out the
meaning of a word I don’t know in a text.
I can identify words with the suffix -ful and know it
means “full of.”
We continue to work this week on ISAT skills and
extended response practice.
Students have been
reading longer passages and writing five paragraphs
essays. They can’t wait to show you these at the
Learning Fair in April! Please be prepared for extra
practice to come home for homework.
Students should be able to say:

after, and half past.
I can tell time to the minute.
I can use estimation and rounding to solve a multi-step
word problem.
I can use front end estimation to round because I know
that front end estimation means round to the greatest

Science
We have just finished Chapter 5- Making Communities
Safer. This chapter was about inventions and inventors
that keep our world safe. Study guides will be given out
This week we will continue our Body Unites! In this unit
students are learning how the body works and how our
organs, bones, and muscles are all connected. So far
tomorrow and the test is Friday (before the party!)
Wall of Fame
we have learned about the brain and the heart! This
week we will read about our kidneys, bladder, and cells!

Valentine party starts at 2:00 pm. Parents who
are helping with the party may come at 1:45.
MAP scores went home last Friday. Your
children rocked the Reading MAP! I am so
proud of their hard work! We are continuing
working on our math skills. Please reinforce
these at home by having your child practice
their multiplication facts and tell time on an
analog clock.
