West Glocester Elementary School Newsletter January 2014 Notes from the Principal Keeping Track of Personal Items It’s highly recommended that personal items be labeled with a student’s name or initials. Hats, gloves, even coats are sometimes tough for children to keep track of. So that there is no mistaking ownership, writing your child’s name on a label or inner seam will help greatly! Study Smart! Start a habit. Encourage your youngster to treat studying as a daily assignment, not just something to be done the evening before a test. For example, your child might study 15 minutes every night for a spelling test on Friday. After they finish their regular homework, they can spend a little time reviewing notes and handouts. ‘Teens For Jeans’ Drive runs from January 6February 1 2: The 3rd graders at WGES are making a difference with Aéropostale & P.S. and holding a Teens for Jeans drive. They will be collecting used jeans (good condition/all sizes) for homeless teens. Each Aéropostale & P.S.store is paired with at least one homeless shelter or charity in the community. Ask your friends, family, & neighbors to help with this great cause. Drop off location is the WGES foyer in the Teens for Jeans bins. If you know any local businesses, ask if they'll put a sign up and be a drop off location for us. The drive will end on February 12th. A grand prize will be awarded to the school that collects the most jeans! The prize includes a $10,000 grant, Aéropostale & P.S. t-shirts, and a party! $5K will be awarded to the top collecting elementary school, middle school, and high school. Anyone who wants to help with this drive, please contact Kim Sanzi [email protected]. We will need help hanging posters in the community and help at the end of the drive counting the jeans and folding them neatly in bins. And depending on how many we collect, we may need a couple of cars to load up and drive the jeans to the nearest Aéropostale location. Dates to Remember January 2 – Welcome back! January 6 – Teens for Jeans clothing drive begins January 7 - SIT meeting at 8:00 am in the computer lab January 17 – Community Lunches (gr 1&2 @11:30, gr 3 @12:10, gr 4 @12:15, gr 5 @12:15) January 20 – Martin Luther King Day – NO SCHOOL News from Room 40 Ms. Jordan’s classroom is eager to raise money for Crohns and Colitis. Crohns and Colitis are diseases that affect the digestive tract. There is no cure for either disease. On December 20th, we held a fundraiser, and we asked students to donate a dollar, and that dollar might be the key to a cure! If you donated a dollar, you could wear your pajamas to school on that day! Last year, Ms. Jordan’s class raised money for Smile Train, and they raised enough money for two surgeries. Last month, we all wore purple and raised $176.30 . We are hoping to have one event a month for the rest of the year. If we raise about the same amount of money each time, we will have raised $1416.40 by the end of the year. Please donate to our fundraiser! Thank you very much. By Ellie Heaney and Elijah Gouin Happy New Year!! Hot cocoa smells like chocolate. Caroline, Sophia and Christian Mrs. Sullivan’s Extra Credit! Sing our favorite Christmas song, “Run Run Rudolph” and count how many similes you hear. Second Graders Are As Proud As Peacocks Mrs. Sullivan’s class has been writing up a storm. We have recently learned a literary trick to help us when we get stumped trying to describe a thought. The trick is to use a simile. It will make you smile too because similes are fun. Liam defines a simile as comparing two things using the words like or as. Here are some of our winter similes to enjoy. Snow angels are like fairies in the winter. Isabella Skis are like skateboards. Lucas and Aaliyah Snowboards are as fast as lightning. Aidan and Phoebe Snowmen are like real people. Brett and Ricky The sled is as fast as a horse. Gracie and Caleb Snowflakes are like my starburst bracelet. Abigail and Bianca Icicles are sharp like a crystal pillar. Brayden Icicles are as cold as snow. Lillian and Riley Snowboards are like flying snow. Wyatt Hot cocoa is like a warm fireplace. Brianna, Talia and Brady Toy Donations Needed At this time of year when you may be wondering where you will store the gifts that the holiday season brings, we are hoping that you may consider donating some of your gently used toys for use in our schools. Teachers working with students with disabilities are looking to gather a collection of toys to be used as options for "choice time." Specifically we are looking for some of the following types of toys: Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Legos, Magnetic Toys, Action Figures, Match Box Cars and/or Bristle Blocks. If you have a donation, please bring it to your child’s school and we will arrange for a pick up. Please note that it is for the Northwest Special Education Region. Alternatively, you can bring items to the Northwest office at 23A Theodore Foster Drive, Foster, RI. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
