Guided Search—Query Language
General Search & Help Information
Publication Number Searching
Boolean Operators
AND—logical union
AND NOT—logical difference
OR—logical intersection
Search Within—search area
•Default search area is Full Text, or
select specific document areas from
“Search Within” drop-down
Proximity & Relevancy Commands
W/n—search words that appear within
n words of each other
W/s—search words that appear within
the same sentence
W/p—search words that appear within
the same paragraph
Pre/n—first search word preceding the
second by not more than the stated
number of words
ATLEAST—required word appears “at
least” so many times (relevancy)
Restrictions—search fields
•Common searchable field names
can be selected from “Restrictions”
drop-down
•Field name can also be typed
directly into “Search Terms” box
Within a Search String
To include a publication number in
any search on the Advanced Search
or Guided Search forms, select the
Publication Number field
Additional Commands
ALLCAPS—find words in which all letters are capitalized
CAPS—find words in which capital letters appear anywhere in word
NOCAPS—find words in which none of
the letters are capitalized
PLURAL—returns plural form only
SINGULAR—singular form only
Wildcards
! root word plus extensions (use at
beginning, middle or end of word)
* single character (**two char, etc)
Tips:
•Not case sensitive
•Plurals are returned by default
•Connectors operate from left to right
Smallest “n” number is operated on
first
•Order of processing - OR; (W/n, PRE/n,
NOT W/n); W/s; W/p; AND; AND NOT
•Finds published applications &
granted patents by default

Semantic Search
Semantic searching facilitates
query creation & improves search
results by using semantics, the science
of meaning in language.
•Select the Semantic Search form
(in the Search tab)
•Enter search items in the Search Input
box, with no Boolean connectors
•“Preview Results”—a weighted list of
terms is generated (Semantic Cloud)—
user can review & modify terms &
weighting prior to running search (no
black box)
•If any changes are made, select “Refresh Preview”
•Select additional criteria as desired
•Run search without analyzing the
•input (terms or phrases/sentences)
•first, by selecting “Search Now”
