Summarizing
Theme
Summarizing helps you remember and
understand what you read. When readers
summarize a story, they decide which details are
most important and retell them in their own
words.
The theme of a story is the message about life,
society, or human nature that the author wants to
convey to the readers. The theme is usually not
stated directly. Readers must use details from the
story to determine the theme.

Grammar: Verb Tenses
Context Clues
When you encounter an unfamiliar word in a
sentence, you can use context clues to help you
figure out the word’s meaning. One type of
context clue is a comparison. A comparison
helps readers understand that the meaning of the
unknown word is similar to or different from
other words in the sentence or nearby sentences.

ss, ch, sh, x, or zz: pushes, buzzes.
If a verb ends with a consonant and the letter y,
change y to i before adding –es: carries
