When readers summarize a story, they decide which details are most important and retell them in their own words. The theme of a story is the message about life, society, or human nature that the author wants to convey to the readers. The theme is usually not stated directly. Readers must use details from the story to determine the theme. Vocabulary Strategy (T88) Grammar: Verb Tenses Context Clues When you encounter an unfamiliar word in a sentence, you can use context clues to help you figure out the word’s meaning. One type of context clue is a comparison. A comparison helps readers understand that the meaning of the unknown word is similar to or different from other words in the sentence or nearby sentences. • • • • • The tense of a verb tells when an action takes place A present tense verb tells what is happening now. To form the present tense of most verbs in the third person, add –s: sees. Add –es to verbs that end in s, ss, ch, sh, x, or zz: pushes, buzzes. If a verb ends with a consonant and the letter y, change y to i before adding –es: carries The present progressive tense shows action that is continuing. Shanae is eating.
