Freezing Oil And Water

Challenge your
friends to move oil
and water without
touching them
1. Put some water and
oil in to the container
and leave for a few
minutes.
You will need:
 A freezer
 Water and vegetable oil
 A plastic container
2. The oil should settle on top
of the water. Now put it into the
freezer and leave for a few
hours.
3. Take out of the
freezer. The oil should
now be below the
water.
What’s going on?
As water freezes, it changes from a liquid to a solid. Unlike most
liquids, water expands when it cools, which means that the particles
take up more space. This is a decrease in density. As the density of
the oil doesn’t change, the ice floats to the top of the oil.
What is a Reversible Reaction?
There are three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas. The state
can change from one to another. For example, if a liquid is cooled, it
will freeze and become a solid. If a solid is heated up, it will melt.
Something's can keep on changing between states, like water. This
is called a reversible change. Some things cannot change back like
an egg. This called an irreversible change.
