IMPORTANT!
If you are celebrating a simcha, please notify the
Center office so that we may announce it in our
Bulletin and also so that Rabbi Waidenbaum can
announce it on Shabbat.
If you are ill, please have someone notify Rabbi
Waidenbaum or the office and let us know if you
would like it announced.
Please don’t assume that the office or Rabbi will
“hear about it.” Please have someone close to you

FROM THE RABBI’S DESK
The importance of Hakarat Hatov - it our our obligation to be thankful and grateful. Gratitude is an
important quality.
To recognize the blessings we have, and to offer our thanks, it is important all year round, not just on
November 28th when we celebrate Thanksgiving.
It is sometimes difficult to fully appreciate these blessings and remember how fortunate we truly are. We
live in a wonderful country which gives us freedom of speech and freedom to practice Judaism - our religion.
What’s so important about showing appreciation? Is it just because it’s etiquette? Absolutely not!
The lack of Hakarat Hatov to a human being leads to a lack of Hakarat Hatov to G-d.
Although on occasion we may be frustrated with things that happen to us in our personal lives and in our
country, we are truly blessed to live in the United States in the 21st century. There have been very few times in
Jewish history where Jewish communities were as free to practice Judaism as we are here in America.
Most of us are blessed with a loving family that cares about us. While families are often separated by
significant distances and are not able to always be there for one another, most of us know that our family members
will be there for us if we really need them to be and we will be there for them when they need us.
Many of us, if not most of us, also have friends we can count on for support when we truly need it. And all
of us have a Jewish community to turn to for help with the challenges we face, and which inspires us to live a
Jewish life
We are there to share our joys and offer support through challenging times, we laugh and cry together, we
learn together, pray together, and repair the world together. (Tikun Olam) All in one beautiful building - our
R.P.J.C.
This year, G-d willing, we will celebrate Thanksgiving on the first day of Chanukah! May our observance
of Chanukah and Thanksgiving inspire us to count our blessings and offer thanks to man and to G-d alike, each
and every day of the year. Amen!!
On behalf of my wife Susan and me, we wish you all a happy Chanukah & Thanksgiving & may the lights
of Chanukah shine brightly on all of us!
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Samuel Waidenbaum

OUR BEAUTIFUL SUKKAH
On Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 10:00 A.M., the following dedicated and loyal members and friends of the
Rego Park Jewish Center gathered in the Grand Ballroom to work and have fun. They were there to prepare the
fruits and vegetables to be hung in our Sukkah.

A heartfelt thank you to all the above. With needles and cord they strung the fruits and vegetables to be hung
in the Sukkah. Now to our building staff - Robin Basdeo and Alvin Saywack. Words fail me when it comes to them.
They were awesome. They stood on ladders and hung the fruits and vegetables from the ceiling of our Sukkah.
Thanks to Miguel Roldan who carried the fruits and vegetables out to Robin and Alvin.
Coffee and danish were served to all.
May Hashem bless all who came and helped and may we all be able to do it again next year. Please join us
next year - it’s lots of fun - and a big mitzvah.
B’Shalom,

FOCUS ON SISTERHOOD
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord of Hosts.”
Zachariah 46: Haftora Chanukah
“It is good to sing praises unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High”
Psalm 92
The unusual “clashing” of the secular and the
lunar calendar demands a special quote for each of the
celebrations, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving - which
coincide for the first time since 1888 and will not recur
again in our lifetime. Thus, on Wednesday evening,
November 27th, which is also “erev” Thanksgiving, we
light the first Hanukkah candle to commemorate the
Maccabees’ fight for religious freedom as well as Jewish
survival. It is also a season of dedication and
rededication. Thanksgiving also is not relegated to only
one day. Our sages tell us that as long as thanksgiving
lasts the world will endure. Therefore, we give thanks to
and praise the Lord for the Nes , the miracle of the small
amount of oil left in the little lamp. The theme of
thanksgiving is a constant presence in our liturgy and it
heightens our awareness of our blessings. We chant on
Shabbat morning, “To You Alone We Give Thanks.” Let
us remember that we should be thankful, and to whom –
and for the privilege of being able to perform the 613
“Mitzvot.”
November is Jewish Book Month and once again
on Tuesday morning at 11 A.M. on November 19th, we
are very fortunate to have our own Mollie Alkana give us
one of her superb book reports and discussions. The book
she has selected is “My Father is A Book”, memoir of
Bernard Malamud by Janna Malamud Smith –
Malamud’s daughter. Janna Malamud Smith has written
a most beautiful, moving, intimate and stirring memoir of
her father. Masterfully, she avoids the twin traps of
nostalgia and blame so dangerous when a child writes
about a parent, and which happens so often when there is
a complicated relationship between a child and a beloved
father. This loving portrait of a writer’s family from the
inside provides a fascinating story for Malamud’s great
fiction. Do try to read the book before the meeting. We
shall also have a short presentation commemorating our
70 years of involvement with Torah Fund. Bring a dairy
sandwich and we shall serve coffee/tea and cake. Of
things to come – Hold The Date! Our December 3rd
meeting will feature a delightful program. It is called “My
Jewish Memoirs and Memory.” We ask you to share
with us those special items and special memories which
makes each one of us unique and very special. Look in
your closets, in your cabinets and search your loving
memories. And don’t be shy!
Shabbat Chaye Sarah (October 25th & 26th ) has
come and gone. Once again our Sisterhood Shabbaton
was a memorable one. Yasyhayr Koach to Shirley Decker
& Miriam Warmbrand, hostesses par excellence, as well
as the entire Sisterhood Board for the wonderful Shabbat
Dinner – seems like only yesterday –IT WAS TRULY IN
THE SPIRIT OF Shabbat- a lot of work but truly
appreciated. Special thanks also to Elaine Abend,
Membership V.P. for hosting our Get Re-Acquainted Tea
on Shabbat afternoon. Todah Rabah to Rabbi
Waidenbaum and to Rabbi Romiel Daniel for making
Shabbat such a meaningful experience and to Rabbi
Waidenbaum for the great learning experience at the
afternoon tea.
Don’t forget to patronize our gift shop for your
Hannukah as well as other gift needs. Let us know if you
have any special needs or want us to special order
something for you. We are here to serve you.
Don’t forget to vote and then together let us
celebrate with pride, dedicate, re-dedicate and give thanks
for the meaningful episodes of our Jewish heritage as well
as those of our national heritage. Even if our world today
seems to be in chaos, turmoil and conflict, may the lights
of the Hanukkah Menorah and the warmth and
camaraderie of the Thanksgiving day illuminate our
homes and may they all be a reminder and a symbol of
the principles of the values of freedom and of peace.

Jacob’s adventurous journey takes him from Beer
Sheva to Haran. He came to a place in the desert,
stopping to rest and he dreamed of a ladder stretching
between heaven and earth with angels going up and
down. Jacob was promised by G-d to have many
descendants. Jacob named the place Bethel. In Haran
he met and loved Rachel, daughter of his uncle Laban.
After serving seven years for her hand, Laban tricked
Jacob, marrying him to Leah, the older sister. Jacob
worked another seven years for Rachel. After twenty
years, Jacob left for Canaan with his two wives, eleven
sons and a daughter.
Haftarat Hosea - Jacob had to serve by guarding
sheep. However, when the Lord brought Israel up from
Egypt, they were guarded through a prophet.

there is a “strong denial by Palestinian and Israeli Arabs
about Jewish history.” “It is a campaign to delegitimize
Israel. They claim Jews have no attachment to this land.
There is no thing as the western wall. They say it is the
southern wall of the Al Aqua Mosque. They say
Rachel’s and Joseph’s tombs are the tombs of Arab

REVIEW
THE JOYFUL SUKKOT
HARVEST FESTIVAL
It was a delight to sit and eat in our beautiful
Sukkah decorated with a bounty of colorful fruits and
vegetables. The walls were hung with scenes of Jewish
life. Having kiddush and hearing the words of wisdom
from the Rabbi added to the spirit of this happy festival.
The special rituals and highlights made this
holiday spiritually and emotionally fulfilling. On the
first day of services we recited the benediction over the
lulav and etrog, and had the joy of parading with other
members carrying their lulov and etrog around our
congregation, wishing all another year together! On this
day and the second day, the Kohanim, with their tallit
over their heads, performed the priestly blessings.
The last two days were both emotional and
dramatic. On Shemini Atzeret we prayed for rain and
held yizkor services. Rabbi Samuel Waidenbaum and
Rabbi Romiel Daniel as Cantor, emotionally chanted the
yizkor prayer for the six million of our people taken
from us by evil. We prayed for lost loved ones. The
last day was Simchat Torah, the heart warming joyous
celebration. Men took turns carrying the Torahs around
the synagogue - followed by women carrying Torahs.
The three biblical men’s divisions were called to the
Torah for blessings. First the Kohanim, then the Levites
and last, the Israelite group followed by the women who
ascended the bimah to receive blessings. Each group
was served wine & cake in the lobby. The two men
chosen for special honors were Arthur Schwartz, Chasan
Torah, and Jonathan Lederer, Chasen Bereishit. Ida &
Arthur Schwartz were escorted down the center aisle,
under a chupa held by friends. They ascended the
bimah, reading the last Bible portion & were blessed
with joyous singing and clapping. Jonathan & Marina
Lederer ascended the bimah under a chupa held by
friends. Jonathan recited the beginning Torah portion.
We all sang and rejoiced with them. It was a day to
remember and not to be missed!
Each service at our Synagogue is inspiring,
inviting your participation. Come sing along with us
and enjoy our warm friendship!

GLOBAL DAY OF
JEWISH LEARNING
On Sunday, November 17th from 10:30 A.M. 12:30 P.M., we will celebrate the Global Day of Jewish
Learning with a special Learn-In and Breakfast. This
event is free to all, but you must make a reservation in
advance.
The Global Day of Jewish Learning has become
an important annual special. It hits “the target” of what
is happening to American Jews! A new poll shows a
major shift of what is happening to American Jews!
The survey found that most Jews do not belong to a
synagogue; many intermarry and do not bring up their
children as Jewish. Some say they are proud to be
Jewish and feel a strong attachment to Israel.
Come hear Rabbi Romiel Daniel & Rabbi Samuel
Waidenbaum, the speakers of this Global Day of Jewish
Learning, impress on the importance of Jewish
continuity and spirituality, the importance of memory in
Judaism and the important role our traditional
conservative Synagogue/Center has enriching your life culturally, religiously and socially.

T’AI CHI CLASS NEWS
There are many ways to help maintain good
health: eat healthy food, exercise, socialize, keep a
good sense of humor and meditate daily. Qi Gong and
T’ai Chi practiced at least twice a week are a most
helpful addition.
In the Orient, Qi Gong and T’ai Chi are practiced
regularly to maintain good health; it is part of a healthy
lifestyle. Here in the West, practicing these forms at
least twice weekly are also part of a healthy lifestyle
regimen. They contribute positively to awareness,
maintaining good balance, good blood pressure
readings and a peaceful mind.
Come and join us and be the beneficiary of good
health, spirit and mind. We meet every Tuesday from
10:15 to 11:15 A.M. Our group members are friendly
and will welcome you.

Our Yiddish Vinkel meets every Wednesday
afternoon at 12:30 P.M. We speak Yiddish, read
Yiddish stories and poems and sing Yiddish songs. So
come, revive your Yiddish. Oh yes, we also enjoy
delicious danish and coffee and warm friendship.
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
The Book Discussion Group meets at our Center
once each month on Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M.
At our November 20th meeting, we will be discussing
My Father Is a Book by Bernard Malamud’s daughter,
Janna Malamud Smith.
Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) was born in
Brooklyn, NY, the son of Russian Jews. He was
educated at the City College of New York where he
received his B.A. degree in 1936, and at Columbia
University (M.A., 1942). He demonstrated his writing
skills while still in high school. He taught at Oregon
State University and later at Bennington College in
Vermont.
Bernard Malamud was a Pulitzer Prize winner for
The Fixer and the author of The Natural and The
Assistant, among other novels and short stories.
“Malamud’s genius is most apparent in his short
stories. Told in a spare compressed prose that reflects
the terse speech of the immigrant characters, the stories
often burst into emotional metaphorical language.”
His literary reputation is as a writer of superb subtlety
and clarity.
Janna Malamud Smith is particularly adept at
drawing parallels between her father’s life and his art in
an analytical, intelligent, honest and loving way.
If you enjoy reading and exchanging views with
intelligent and informed people, you will find our book
discussion stimulating and thought provoking.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST CLUB &
LEARN-IN WITH THE RABBI
The new season is in full swing! This past month
Rabbi Waidenbaum enlightened us on the Judaic belief
in the “Three Pillars of the World”, Torah - Prayer - and
acts of kindness.
We discussed Shabbat, the holiest day and why,
when a holiday occurs on Shabbat, it is treated as an
honored guest.
We learned that prayer serves to elevate man
closer to G-d and that for us to ask G-d for our needs to
be met, we must earn his hearing us by performing good
deeds.
Rabbi Waidenbaum discussed “Judges” (who
were also warriors and prophets) and their role in
keeping people on the straight and narrow. Then and
now, only by using Torah as our guide, while exercising
free will, can we avoid bad consequences.
We learned about such notable Judges as Devora,
Samson and Samuel, the last and most important, who
anointed Saul and David as Kings.
Join us for upcoming breakfast get-togethers
when we will be discussing the famous Prophets of our
history.
