Robert Brook, MD, chair of the American Heart Association committee that

technique may be considered in the a treatment of high blood
pressure, will give a free presentation on
May 5 sponsored by the Maharishi College of Perfect Health as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.

In addition, last year he spent a number of days in Fairfield and Maharishi
Vedic City when he took advantage of
the Maharishi Ayurveda® treatment offered by The Raj health spa.
In 2013, Mr. Carrey released a children’s book, How Roland Rolls, which
received the Gelett Burgess Children’s
Book Award for contributions to children’s literature.
“Mr. Carrey’s wisdom, deep clarity, and
compassion — as exemplified in his profoundly charming book — has captured
and inspired many of us in this meditating community,” said Dr. John Hagelin,
MUM professor and trustee. “The classical message of Vedanta, of enlightenment and universal love, so charmingly
told and accessible to children, is a precious contribution to humanity in its own
right.”
Mr. Carrey is also a celebrated painter
and sculptor. He won rave reviews from
critics at his debut art exhibit Nothing To
See Here in Palm Desert in 2011.
Mr. Carrey will next be seen on film
starring in the comedy Dumb and Dumber To, the long-awaited sequel to Dumb
and Dumber.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Carrey has been recognized numerous times
by the MTV Movie Awards, People’s
Choice Awards, and Nickelodeon Kids’
Choice Awards.
He won a Golden Globe Award for
Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama,
GPSUIFUJUMFSPMFJO1FUFS8FJSTThe Truman Show. He won his second Golden
Globe, for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, for his portrayal of comedian Andy Kaufman in
Milos Forman’s Man on the Moon.
Other film credits include I Love You
Phillip Morris, Yes Man, Bruce Almighty,
Liar, Liar, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The
Mask, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for which he received Golden
Globes and BAFTA Award nominations
for best actor in 2004.
In 2005, Mr. Carrey founded The Better U Foundation, which addresses global
food security and helps rice farmers earn
a better living for their families by supporting the System of Rice Intensification.

Student Organic Farm to Offer
Community Supported Agriculture
Fresh organic produce from the new
Student Organic Farm on campus will be
available at a discount beginning in June
for those who participate in the community supported agriculture (CSA) option.
The one-acre MUM greenhouse six
miles north of campus has been sold, and
farming has relocated to the small campus greenhouses on the east side of campus and the land north and east of the
Punj Tennis Center.
The new location will make it easier
for students to work on the farm, as interns or as students in courses in the Sustainable Living agriculture track, or as
volunteers.
From June through October, those interested in purchasing produce from the
farm will have the option of participating in a CSA, said Steve McLaskey, who
heads the farming project.
Unlike a traditional CSA, the MUM
option will be more flexible. Individuals
will pay up front for five months’ worth
of vegetables, and receive a 5–6% discount, depending on whether they purchase a quarter, half, or full share.
The produce will be sold at the weekly
farmers market in Fairfield. Anyone will
be able to purchase the produce, but those
participating in the CSA will receive the
discount.
“Agriculture has a lot of expenses up
front, with income later, so a CSA helps
with the expenses,” Dr. McLaskey said.
“It’s like buying a share of the farm, and
sharing in the abundance and challenges.”
He said the new location will have
many advantages. In addition to being
more convenient for students, it will also
be easier for community members to roll
up their sleeves and get some healthy
outdoor activity during the summer.
The shares will have three levels, costing $235 for a $250 credit toward produce, $355 for $375 of credit, and $470
for $500 in credit. Shares can be purchased at the farmers market, which is
held at Howard Park one block north of
the Courthouse May through October
and in the Senior Citizens Center November through April. A limited number
of shares are available.
Some 30–40 of the most common
vegetables and herbs will be available, depending on the weather, including chard,
kale, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, broccoli, and cauliflower.
Although the CSA will only be June
through October, vegetables from the
greenhouses will be for sale at the farmers market through the winter.

Dr. Herriott to
Publish Book on
Sustainable Tech
Management professor Scott Herriott
recently signed a contract with Business
Experts Press to publish a textbook titled
Sustainable Technologies: An EngineeringEconomic Perspective.
The book will be published as part
of their Sustainable Business collection
edited by Chris Laszlo, the well-known
author of Embedded Sustainability.
The inception of Dr. Herriott’s book
project was in 2010 when he created an
MBA course on sustainable technologies,
but was unable to find a textbook for the
subject. He wrote out his lectures and
printed the notes for students to read.
He then continued to add text to his
lecture notes and homework exercises
from past exam questions each time he
taught the course. The result is a 200-page
textbook. He will submit the final version
to his publisher in July, after teaching his
sustainable technologies course in June.
Business Experts Press will also publish a European edition that will use metric units for all examples and will describe
public policies for sustainable technologies in a European context. It will be coauthored by Sharon George, director of
the MSc program in environmental sustainability and green technology at the
University of Keele in England.
Dr. Herriott is also working on a book
titled Metrics for Sustainability based on a
course he has been teaching since 2011.
It describes ways to measure the sustainability of products, processes, and organizations.

ems are wonderful gifts of nature that have been created and refined over thousands of years by the immense
organizing power of Natural Law.
Gems represent
the most compact and powerful expression of the intelligence
and order of Natural Law. The knowledge of the correct recommendation, type, quality and use of gemstones is now available to create greater harmony in life. Each of the nine grahas
(planets), including the two lunar nodes, has a corresponding
gemstone. For optimal influence, each gem must meet specific
criteria of purity, color, shape, etc. A very small proportion of
the gems available today satisfies the required criteria and we
offer only those gems that meet these rigorous criteria.
