2015 - 2016 Academic Achievements · One hundred sixty‐four High School students and June 2015 graduates were named AP Scholars by The College Board in recognition of their outstanding performance on three or more national Advanced Placement exams administered through May 2015. In addition to being designated AP Scholars with Distinction, 20 Shaker students were named National AP Scholars. · Max Cassell, Allison Kao, and Anna Seballos are receiving National Merit Scholarships of $2,500 each. · Senior Sarah Jacob was named a Gates Millennium Scholar for excellence in leadership, community service, and academic achievement. · Senior Joshua Elmore (bassoon) was selected for the second consecutive year as a member of the National Youth Orchestra. Josh also was admitted to the Juilliard School of Music on a full scholarship. · Senior Allison Kao is one of 150 high school students nationwide to receive the 2016 Coca Cola Scholarship based on leadership and academic achievements. She also won three top awards at the NEO Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State, where 600 students from 80 schools competed. · Thirteen High School students are Ohio History Day champions and qualify for National History Day. · Eight High School art students were honored by the Cleveland Clinic for work they created based on scientific research as part of the 2015‐2016 eXpressions Art Program. · Woodbury’s Raider Robotics team took home the Special Project Award, one of three top awards, in a regional First Lego League event in December. · The Shakerite and shakerite.com have earned a third consecutive Gold Crown for overall excellence in scholastic journalism from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. · High School art students won 68 awards in the 2016 Regional Scholastic Art Competition and Exhibition, receiving more honors than any other participating high school. The awards include 14 Gold Keys, 13 Silver Keys, 18 Honorable Mentions, and three special awards. Works of art by Middle School students Sedona Jolly and Eliza Schwartz‐Katz won Scholastic Art Awards in the Cuyahoga County Regional Scholastic Art Competition. · Lauryn Hobbs is one of 160 outstanding seniors selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar based on exemplary academic, leadership, artistic, and citizenship performance. She also was recognized by the National YoungArts Foundation for a second consecutive year. · More than 100 Shaker Heights Middle School and Woodbury students represented 168 countries at the Ohio Leadership Institute’s Junior Ohio Model UN conference. · Twenty‐four Shaker students, from fifth through 12th grades, are winners in the 2016 Ohio K‐12 Chinese Speech and Essay Contest. · Senior Amani Hill won the Cleveland Princeton Prize for Race Relations, which honors students whose volunteer work improves race relations. Senior Mica Jordan was a finalist. · Students of Latin and Greek earned 29 gold, silver, and bronze medals on the National Classical Etymology Exam. Six High School students won top awards for their performance on the Medusa Mythology Exam, including a gold medal for Sam Katz, and eight High School students were recognized for their top entries in the Classical Association of the Midwest and South Translation Contest. · More than 120 High School and Middle School students earned awards on the 2016 National Latin Exam, including four perfect scores. Twenty‐one students won medals on the National Latin Vocabulary Exam, and 16 won medals for their National Roman Civilization Exam results. Three High School students earned the top three places in the Annual Vergil Week Latin Recitation at Case Western Reserve University. · Forty High School and Middle School students brought home “Best in State” from the 2016 Ohio Junior Classical Language Convention for the third consecutive year. · Sixty High School students received awards for the 2016 National German Exam; 36 students earned awards on the National French Exam; and 46 students earned awards on the National Spanish Exam. · Chess teams from Woodbury and Lomond won awards at the Ohio championships. · More than 300 High School band students traveled to Spain for their concert tour during spring break. Co‐curricular Activities · The men’s basketball team won sectionals this year. · The men’s soccer team made it to regional semifinals in back‐to‐back years. · Four members of the women’s field hockey team were selected for the National Academic Squad, and junior Megan Mitchell was cleveland.com’s Field Hockey Player of the Year. · The women’s cross country team qualified for states for the first time in their history and finished ninth. Mimi Reimers and Sophie Carrier won All‐Ohio honors. Justin Moore of the men’s team qualified for states and finished 32nd overall. · Freshman Sophie Calabrese is one of 40 rowers to be selected for the USRowing Junior National Development Camp. · Freshman Lyle Yost finished second in states and is one of 24 divers chosen for the 2016 USA Diving Junior National Squad. Junior Max Gustafson shattered a 16‐year record for the 100M butterfly at the NEO Classic Invitational. · Wrestlers Farouq Muhammed and Tyson Long qualified for states for the first time in Shaker wrestling history. · The hockey team won the Baron Cup for the eleventh time, but the first since 2001. Eight hockey players were recognized in the Red North All‐Division teams, and the team made it to the district semifinals. · Four of the six girls’ crew boats make it to regionals, and three will compete at nationals. · Senior Matthew Klein won a gold medal in the International Senior Taekwondo Open. · Middle schoolers Nicolas Poggio (cross country skiing) and Ella Ustin (Nordic skiing) competed in the 2016 International Children’s Games.
