time. This archaeological site is located in the heart of Cusco city, to scanty 4 blocks of the
Main Square.

DAY 2: SACRED VALLEY
For the Incas and their descendants, the
Urubamba or Vilcanota River brought and
still brings fertility to the earth, as this river
has its source in the high mountains,
Southeast of Cusco, and is perceived as
representing the cycle of water. All along this
so fertile and beautiful valley we now call the
Sacred Valley of the Incas several important
Incan architectural complexes are located
on the heights or alongside the river.
After a breathtaking trip by car, with the
beautiful snowcapped Chicon and Veronica
mountains in the Cordillera Vilcanota as a
backdrop, we will visit Moray, the Inca
agricultural laboratory where they studied
the adaptation of plants to new ecosystems,
then we will visit Maras, a beautiful colonial
t o w n a n d its salt mines, exploited
artesanally since inca times, after it we will
have a beautiful walk for one hour to our
restaurant for lunch.
In the Afternoon, we will visit the locality of
Ollantaytambo, considered as the Last
Living Incan Village in the Sacred Valley.
From there, we´ll have time to hike up to the
Incan temples and other areas of the large
and finely built Incan architectural complex
erected during the Imperial Period, where
General Ollanta attempted to challenge the
power of Pachakuteq Inca.
In the same area, there are many smaller

archaeological sites, located nearby and
within this lovely and fertile valley that
primarily produces top-grade corn, and is
presently the scene of a steadily growing
daily tourist flow.

In the morning, we´ll leave your hotel at 8:30 a.m., to travel on a private vehicle to Paruro,
South of the city of Cusco, which will take about half an hour, to get to the trailhead, located
on the road to Punacancha, from which we´ll hike towards the sandstone formations, part of
which is the Sacred Mount Huanacaure.
Then, it will take us about 45 minutes of uphill hiking, to go from the road to the remains of the
earliest of the Incan temples, built during the Inca Manco Qhapaq´s reign, in the 12th
century, and the true origins of which disappear in the myths that tell us about the Incan
Empire´s origins and birthplace.
So, according to both Incan myths of origin, this is where Manco´s golden staff sank into the
ground, which signaled to him the valley that was to become the center of the Incan
civilization; the mighty Qosqo or Navel of All Nations and origin of the Tahuantinsuyu which,
later on, became the great Incan State, and eventually, a Great Empire, under the
Government of Inca Pachakuteq, during the 15th century.
In the afternoon we will drive to visit the Central Market, "a traditional market where we will
get a sense of the daily rhythm of the Cuzqueño life. From open air stalls, everything from
coca leaves, carrots, rubber boots, jeans, padlocks, beef, live chickens and ducks, to cuys,
band-aids, and a range of familiar and unfamiliar fruits and vegetables are sold - sometimes
for cash, sometimes in the traditional barter fashion.
