The English language has 12 verb tenses, some
much more frequently used than others. It‘s
important to know when to use what tense as well
as to know which tenses are more important than
others. This all depends on what you talk about
whether it be the future, past or present.

Present Tenses
Please note
Present Simple describes daily routines,
habits, and activities.
Present continuous describes what is
happening now or in the near future.
Examples:
Present Simple
Present Continuous
I get up at 9:00
I am reviewing English tenses
I monitor budgets

Past Tenses
Please note
Simple Past describes single, finished actions.
Past continuous describes interrupted or
parallel actions in the past.

She slept until 11:00.

I was sleeping when she called.
She was working when he came over.

Present Perfect tenses
Please note
Present Perfect Simple describes experiences
without a specific time
Present Perfect Continuous describes ongoing
actions from the past.
Examples:
Present Perfect Simple
Present Perfect Continuous
I have visited 25 states.
I have been working here for years.
She has eaten 5 hot dogs so far.
She has been teaching since 1999.
We have learned so much with
you!
We have been playing games
since 10 o‘clock this morning.

Past Perfect tenses
Please note
Past Perfect Simple describes a completed
action before another past action.
Past Perfect Continuous describes two past
actions, but one is continuous and one
interrupted.
Examples:
Past Perfect Simple
I had spent so much time at the
mall but still didn‘t find anything I
liked.
I went to go get some pizza but
the pizza shop had already
closed.

Past Perfect Continuous
I had been going to the gym for a
year when they doubled the
membership fee!
My dog was wet because he had
been playing in the rain.

Future tenses
Please note
Future Simple describes actions or plans in
the future.
Future Continuous describes actions or plans
in the future at a specific time
Will and Going To are both very similar but Will is for
indefinite/spontaneous plans while Going To is for definite plans
Examples:
Future Simple
Future Continuous
Perhaps I will stay at home
This time next week, I‘ll be relaxing
on the beach!
She’s going to arrive soon.
We will wait for you at the station.

will be completed in the near future.
Future Perfect Continuous describes present
continuous actions that will be completed in
the future at a specific time

By the end of 2017, he will have
finally graduated.
I will have been learning
English for 4 years by the end of
March.
By the end of 2020, they will have
been married for 40 years.
