Earth, Moon, and Sun

Earth, Moon,
and Sun
Earth and the Moon
move in predictable
ways as they orbit
the Sun.
Key Concepts
SECTION
1
Earth rotates on a tilted
axis and orbits the Sun.
Learn what causes day and
night and why there
are seasons.
SECTION
2
The Moon is Earth’s
natural satellite.
Learn about the structure and
motion of Earth’s Moon.
SECTION
3
Positions of the Sun
and Moon affect Earth.
Learn about phases of the
Moon, eclipses, and tides.

704 Unit 6: Space Science
What would you see if
you looked at the Moon
with a telescope?
How Do Shadows Move?
Place a small sticky note on a window that
sunlight shines through. At several different
times of day, sketch the
location of the note’s
shadow in the room.
Observe and Think
Does the shadow move
in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction?
Does the shadow’s
distance from the
window change?
What Makes the Moon Bright?
On a day when you see the Moon in the sky,
compare it with a round object. Hold the object
in line with the Moon.
Make sure that your hand
does not block the sunlight. Notice the part of
the object that is bright.
Observe and Think
How does the sunlight on
the object compare with
the light on the Moon?
Internet Activity: Seasons
Go to ClassZone.com to explore seasons. Find
out how sunlight affects the temperature in
different places at different times of year.
Observe and Think
Does the picture show
Earth in June or
in December?

TAKING NOTES
COMBINATION NOTES
To take notes about a new
concept, first make an
informal outline of the
information. Then make a
sketch of the concept and
label it so you can study
it later.
VOCABULARY
STRATEGY
Write each new vocabulary
term in the center of a
frame game diagram.
Decide what information
to frame the term with.
Use examples, descriptions,
pictures, or sentences in
which the term is used in
context. You can change
the frame to fit each term.

NOTES
north
Earth turns.
• It turns on an imaginary axis.
• Poles are ends of axis.
• Equator is halfway.
• Rotation takes 24 hours.
• Sun shines on one side only.
• Light side is daytime.
• Dark side is night.
