ERINOAK 2004–2005 Annual Report | 3
Board Chair & CEO’s Report
Philip Wilson and Linda Rothney
“Helping children be the best they can be” took on a whole new meaning at
Erinoak as we proudly congratulated Curtis Thom, Shane Risto, Katie Wallace, and Chelsea Clark for their outstanding
performances at the 2004 World Paralympics in Athens, Greece. We greatly admire their accomplishments. They have
set a gold standard for us all — to reach for our personal best every day in every way.
While Erinoak doesn’t compete on the
world stage like our Paralympians,
the many accomplishments of our
clients, staff and teams have certainly
made it, in our view, an award winning year. The 2004–2005 year saw
the implementation of a new region
wide program on time and on target
in an important new partnership with
the education system; the achievement
of growth service targets; and the
continuing record of strong fiscal
management, balanced budgets, and
low cost of administration. Our quality
improvement teams are striking gold:
the Brief Intervention Clinic Team
won a prestigious national best
practice award; and our Client
Services Intake Team, using modern
call centre technology, re-engineered
our intake process to a benchmark
standard—clinical integration at its
best. This year’s clinical achievements
demonstrate the passion of our
specialized staff to help children with
disabilities reach their potential.
Please refer to Dr. Hogan’s report for
key accomplishments by program,
and advancements in care pathways
and outcome measures. Her report,
together with the information to follow,
demonstrates the commitment of
Erinoak to provide the very best
services and supports to our clients;
to be accountable to our funders and
the community we serve; and to continuously strive to improve all we do.
Our new motto is “practise change
and change practice for the better.”
Organizational Innovation
and Development
Flush with the success of having
implemented the first phase of our
information technology (IT) strategy
on time and on budget, we began the
year with strengthened MIS compliant
financial capacity. The partnership
with Bloorview MacMillan Children’s
Centre has exceeded our expectations.
The expertise and professionalism of
their IT Department are remarkable.
It is widely acknowledged that IT is
a very important enabler of health
system integration and as such, we
are aligning our efforts with government’s priority to advance the
electronic health record.
“Going for gold’ this year we
implemented the School Support
Program–Autism Spectrum Disorder
(SSP–ASD) for 12 school boards and
over 735 schools throughout Halton,
Peel, Waterloo, Wellington, and
Dufferin counties. In less than six
months and in partnership with our
colleagues in education we recruited
33 highly qualified ASD Consultants
to provide training and educational
supports for teachers who have children with autism in their classrooms.
Remarkably, the team was able to
create a resource library of over 800
publications, provide training for
over 750 education staff, and sign
memoranda of understanding and
operating protocols with all school
boards. Our new IT system has
enabled us to locate these staff within
the school boards and connect them
remotely to Erinoak—a win-win
situation: a truly integrated program
and reduced costs of rental accommodation for staff offices.
Integration of Clinical Services
One of the unsung benefits of the lead
agency model adopted by MCYS for the
implementation of new provincial
programs is the facility for service
system integration. Erinoak’s new
Client Services Intake Centre is a
great example of this. Over the last
four years, Erinoak has implemented
three large programs across Central
West Region in partnership with
multiple service providers in the
acute, community, private and social
services sectors. As each initiative
was introduced, program specific
intake procedures were implemented.
Our client satisfaction survey (2003)
revealed that clients found the intake
process confusing, inefficient, and
impersonal. We decided to make
intake a top priority for improvement
and chartered an improvement team.
After 16 months of careful analysis
and using the principles of modern
“call centre” technology, the Client

Board Chair & CEO’s Report
Services Intake Centre opened to
rave reviews. Now, 80% of calls
are answered personally within 19
seconds; eligibility for programs and
services is determined; appropriate
referrals facilitated; and information
provided about services available in
the community. This client-focused
team redesigned for system integration and improved organizational
capacity in a meaningful and enduring way. We are very proud of the
team’s achievement.
Similarly, great strides were made
to understand more fully the issues
raised during our most recent client
satisfaction survey. Our quality management facilitator held focus groups
with clients and parents and says the
feedback received was like “striking
gold.” This rich information challenges
us, among other things, to focus
on improving access and providing
information and opportunities for
parent interaction while clients wait
for assessment. Hopefully, our next
client survey will show we have
made meaningful improvements in
areas most important to our clients
and families.
(continued from previous page)
Our Most Valuable Resource
Families tell us how much they value
the skilled and talented staff that care
for their children. A primary focus of
Erinoak is to build and preserve this
rich resource of experience in paediatric development and rehabilitation.
To do this, Erinoak must be a great
place to work and so, we were very
pleased with the results of our third
employee survey. Once again, we
had a wonderful participation rate
of 71%, which is clearly a testament
that employees care about Erinoak
as a place to work and to provide care.
Once again, Erinoak’s scores were
above the average in all major categories and our staff rated Erinoak as
the high performer in eight areas:
asking for employee’s opinions,
mutual respect among co-workers,
positive/fun work environment,
flexibility in scheduling, personal
security/safety in the workplace,
respect for diversity and commitment
to staying with the organization. The
results demonstrate the willingness
and eagerness of staff to participate
in the decision-making processes and
to provide input into improving our
workplace. While we can take
pride in the results that highlight
our workplace as outstanding in a
number of aspects, there is always
room for improvement. Already, the
Staff Advisory Committee has implemented two strategies to improve
communication across our service
sites: on-line “Ask The Senior Team”;
and a newsletter called “In-Sites”
written by staff for staff. This year’s
staff development offerings included
a two-day workshop on the Learning
Organization and in-services on
myriad topics such as Dealing With
Difficult Emotions, Myers Briggs,
and Stress Management. Together,
we strive to make Erinoak an even
greater place to work!
Hearts of Gold
As we pause to reflect on the
2004–2005 year, the essential role
of our over 340 active volunteers,
who contributed almost 14,000 hours,
is noted with sincere gratitude. To our
Board members, your passion for the
children, your gifts of wisdom and
time, and your unwavering confidence
in us are so important. Thank you.
Finally, special appreciation to our
donors and corporate sponsors.
With the ongoing support of our
community, together, we make
meaningful improvements for
children with disabilities and the
world in which they live.
As we look forward to the challenging year ahead, we are inspired
by our young clients as they strive to
“be the best they can be”. When a child
with disabilities achieves a personal
best, it is a gold medal day for us all!

Dr. Gillian Hogan
Each year as I approach the task of writing this report I am impressed
anew with the creativity and commitment of our staff. Reviewing the activities of the previous year is a reminder of
the breadth and the richness of the services that we provide. As a result, the job of choosing topics for discussion
in this report is always a difficult one, and this year has been no exception. Here are my “picks” for 2004–2005.

The Halton-Peel Preschool Speech
and Language Program (HPPSLP)
provided services to 3,899 children
this year. The program continues to
demonstrate its commitment to providing efficient, high-quality services.
This year saw the introduction of
the “Sounds Right Program” which
coaches parents of children with
speech problems as an alternative
to traditional treatment methods.
This program has been shown to
achieve better results than direct
intervention (therapist to child), and
reduces by half the amount of therapist time required per client. HPPSLP
has established a partnership with
Peel Infant Development to screen
high-risk premature infants and
toddlers for speech/language delay.
(continued from previous page)
HPPSLP staff was delighted to receive
a funding increase this year, which
will enable this program to further
improve service to young children
with speech/language delay.
We have made significant strides
in developing indicators to monitor
quality and organizational performance. Goal Attainment Scaling is
being successfully used in several
programs to enable us to determine
whether individual clients have met
their goals and to measure outcomes
for services/programs. Considerable
headway has been made in the development of Clinical Care Pathways—
a project that we expect will help us
to ensure that our clients receive
appropriate and comprehensive
therapies and services in a timely

manner. We are using the information from our Client Satisfaction
Survey to highlight areas for
improvement in the coming year.
In short, I am confident that I will
be faced with my “annual dilemma”
a year from now as I try to select
areas for discussion in this report
all the while conscious of the many
accomplishments and contributions
of our staff that don’t “make the
pick”. Therefore, I would like to take
this opportunity now to thank all of
our staff for their ongoing dedication
and hard work.

Community Resources and how they are used
Erinoak is a charitable, not-for-profit, accredited children’s treatment centre,
today serving over 7,500 children and youth with disabilities, and their families. For over thirty years, we have been able
to provide a wide range of services and therapy support to our clients with physical, developmental and/or communication
challenges. Our goal is helping children “be the best they can be”.
While we receive provincial funding for core programs,
Erinoak continues to rely on the community to assist in
providing some key programs, enhanced services and
specialized equipment for long or short-term client use.
Erinoak is currently faced with increased competition
for government funding and donor dollars as well as a
surge in service needs for our client children. Our needs
are real and the challenges urgent!
Every day, individuals, service groups, businesses
and organizations directly enhance the lives of our
young clients.
The children thank you.

At the Heart
of the Matter:
Erinoak Volunteers
Assisting us at every step are dedicated volunteers from
all corners of Peel and Halton. These individuals devote
their time, energy and knowledge. They provide integral
support to therapy programs, administrative projects
and fundraising initiatives. This year saw more than
340 active volunteers committing over 14,000 hours to
our children and families. Erinoak volunteers, helping
to make a difference, every day.
A caring moment between a Respite Camp client and staff.

Auditors’ Report on Summarized Financial Statements
To the Members of Erinoak
Serving Young People with
Physical Disabilities
The accompanying summarized
statements of financial position,
operations and changes in net assets
are derived from the complete
financial statements of Erinoak
Serving Young People with Physical
Disabilities as at March 31, 2005
and for the year then ended on
which we expressed an opinion with
reservation as to the completeness
of revenue from donations and
fundraising events as disclosed in
our report dated May 13, 2005.
The fair summarization of the
complete financial statements is the
responsibility of management. Our
responsibility, in accordance with the
applicable Assurance Guideline of
The Canadian Institute of Chartered
Accountants, is to report on the
summarized financial statements.
In our opinion, the accompanying

complete financial statements in
accordance with the criteria described
in the Guideline referred to above.
These summarized financial
statements do not contain all the
disclosures required by Canadian
generally accepted accounting
principles. Readers are cautioned
that these statements may not be
appropriate for their purposes.
For more information on Erinoak’s
financial position, results of financial
