Three new
principals
will have big
shoes to fill
With the impending retirement of three principals, some
Bartlesville Public School District sites will have new people
guiding them during the upcoming 2011-12 academic year.
Beth Cook is stepping down
after 13 years as the principal
at Richard Kane Elementary
School while Richard Dennis
will give up the reins at Wayside
Elementary School after serving
a decade. Lexie Radebaugh is retiring after spending five years as
the principal at Madison Middle
School.
Stepping in to fill the impending vacancies will be Shelly
White (at Kane), Ken Copeland
(Wayside) and Joey Eidson
(Madison). White spent 15 years
as a teacher at Woodrow Wilson
Elementary School and is in her
first year as the BPSD’s supervisor of accountability, assessment
and instructional technology.
Copeland served three years as
the principal at Jane Phillips Elementary School and is currently
in the same role at Oak Park
Elementary School, which will

Wilson opens doors to oak park students, families
Woodrow Wilson Elementary School
played host to a special open house
event on Thursday evening for Oak
Park Elementary School students
and their families. Pictured, a Wilson
teacher offers assistance to an Oak
Park family. With Oak Park due to
close at the end of the current 201011 academic year, and subsequent
adjustments made to the district
attendance boundaries, the Oak Park
neighborhood will now be part of the
Wilson district. Thus, approximately
200 Oak Park students will officially
join the Wilson family in August, when
the 2011-12 academic year begins. An
estimated 50 to 75 Oak Park families
attended Thursday evening’s open house
event at Oak Park. While there, they
were greeted by Wilson teachers and
administrators and toured classrooms
and other areas such as the gymnasium
and cafeteria. The Wilson ParentTeacher Organization even put together
welcome packages for the students. On
Monday, Oak Park students will take
a field trip to Wilson to tour their new
school. With re-districting affecting the
boundaries of other elementary sites
within the district, open house events
were held at Hoover, Ranch Heights
and Wayside elementary schools on
Thursday evening as well.
K9s in Flight set to dazzle again at SunFest
Photo Special to The Bruin
The K9s in Flight are scheduled to perform eight times at the 29th annual SunFest, which
is scheduled to take place in Bartlesville’s Sooner Park from June 3-5.
For the last few years, those
times when SunFest has gone to the
dogs have proven to be quite entertaining.
Playful pooches will be back
this year when the K9s in Flight
perform several shows at the 29th
annual SunFest, which is scheduled to take place from June 3-5
at Bartlesville’s Sooner Park. Affectionately known as “Oklahoma’s
Biggest Outdoor Picnic,” SunFest
is a family-friendly festival offering arts, crafts, food, a car show and
plenty of music.
There is no entry fee for Sun-
Fest, and all performances by the
K9s in Flight – as well as all of the
musical acts – are offered free of
charge. The K9s in Flight are scheduled to perform eight times over the
span of this year’s SunFest. They
are set to showcase their skills four
times on Saturday as well as two
times apiece on both Friday and
Sunday. Each performance is expected to last 20 to 25 minutes.
“We’re happy to be able to
showcase the K9s in Flight this
year,” says Bo Wilson, a member
of the SunFest board of directors.
“They put on a great show, and I
think everyone will enjoy it.”
One of the slogans of the K9s
in Flight team is “homeless to high
flying,” and it goes a long way
toward describing the program. All
of the dogs who perform – there are
typically six per show – have been
rescued or adopted from shelters
across the country. Thus, while the
show demonstrates the amazing
ability of the canines, it also emphasizes the importance of good dog
care – such as proper exercise and
nutrition.
During the performances, the
dogs show off their high-jumping,
Frisbee-catching abilities. The show
is for audience members of all ages
and usually leaves everyone smiling.
Led by John Misita, the K9s in
Flight have more than 15 years of
professional experience, entertaining
everywhere from state fairs to the
halftime of NFL and NBA games.
The program has been featured on
the Discovery Channel, ESPN, the
Disney Channel, HBO, the Jerry
Lewis Telethon, MTV and Animal
Planet, with which it toured. The
K9s in Flight have been written
about in newspapers and magazines
around the country, also.
The K9s in Flight performances are choreographed to display the
best that each of the athletic dogs
has to offer. In that way, they go far
beyond a mere “pitch and catch”
Frisbee show.
During the shows, the dogs
are featured on a set “stage” area. It
features plenty of fun activities and
challenges for the canine athletes to
show off exactly what they can do.
In addition, there is plenty of opportunity for fan participation in the
frisky fun.
The K9s in Flight shows are
scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on

Hatheway give some attention to Keesh, which is a labradoodle. Madison English students in
the classes of Cecilia Williams, Chris Van Steenvoort and Patty Strothman have recently been
reading “The Call of the Wild,” in which the book’s protagonist, domesticated dog Buck, is
scooped up and shipped off to the Klondike area during the time of the gold rush. The book
chronicles Buck’s transformation from a pampered pet to a primordial beast. While visiting
Madison, Rogers talked about bonding and training working dogs as well as his job as a drug
detection dog handler and owner.

Ten students from Bartlesville High School were recognized for
their outstanding performance on the 2011 National Spanish Examinations on Thursday morning during the 2011 BHS Recognition Assembly in the Fine Arts Center auditorium.
Juniors Moncerat Sanchez and Jessica Hernandez were named
silver medalists for their excellent showing on the exam, while senior
Yocelin Montanez and junior Luis Higareda were recognized as bronze
medalists.
Earning honorable mentions were senior Brian Bates and juniors
Haley Culver, Gabriela Montes, Laura Davidson, Karina Aranda and
Victoria Hughes.
“Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the
National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” says national director of the exams Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, “because the exams are the
largest of their kind in the United States with 140,373 students participating in 2011.”
Guiding all 10 BHS students who excelled on the 2011 National Spanish Examinations is Anne Perrine, who is a BHS Spanish
teacher.
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in
grades six through 12 and are sponsored by the American Association
of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Each student from throughout
the country who is recognized as a medalist or as an honorable mention
is presented with a certificate of recognition and receives a cash prize

GRADUATION - Continued from Page 1
The graduation rehearsal gave way to a senior class
program in the Fine Arts Center auditorium later in the
morning followed by the annual senior class breakfast at
the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville.
This evening, the BHS Class of 2011 will convene
for a picture in the BHS Fieldhouse – in their caps and
gowns – at 7 p.m. Approximately a half hour later, they
will line up in the BHS Fieldhouse in anticipation of
their traditional march to Custer Stadium for the beginning of the graduation proceedings.
Though graduation is scheduled for this evening,
the BHS Class of 2011 won’t officially make its exit
until Thursday, as some school days which were lost
to inclement weather had to be added onto the end of
the current 2010-11 academic year calendar. But when
the Class of 2011 does conclude its time at BHS, it will
most certainly be missed.
“We are very proud of the Class of 2011,” says
Brant. “They have faced many difficult moments along
the way to their graduation, and they have a persevering
spirit.
“They are exceptional young men and women, and
we look forward to seeing many good things from them
in the future.”
In all, an estimated 400 students are expected to be
adorned in their traditional caps and gowns this evening
as part of the graduation festivities. As is BHS tradition,
all of the speeches and entertainment provided during
commencement will be provided courtesy of members
of the graduating class. Set to speak during this evening’s event are student body president Thomas Bridges
and senior class president Emily Mueller.
BHS commencement ceremonies are always free
and open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend. General admission seating is available throughout
the stands at Custer Stadium. Friends and family members of the BHS Class of 2011 are encouraged to arrive
early to allow for the best parking and seating available.
The gates at Custer – all stadium entrances will be in
use – will open at 6 p.m.
After the commencement ceremonies have concluded – and the newly christened graduates have been
formally dismissed – family members are invited onto
the Custer Stadium field area to take photos. However,
since artificial turf covers the field area, shoes with a
wedge, flat shoes or heels which are at least the size of a
quarter are necessary.
