Pictured, a Wilson teacher offers assistance to an Oak Park family. With Oak Park due to close at the end of the current 201011 academic year, and subsequent adjustments made to the district attendance boundaries, the Oak Park neighborhood will now be part of the Wilson district. Thus, approximately 200 Oak Park students will officially join the Wilson family in August, when the 2011-12 academic year begins. An estimated 50 to 75 Oak Park families attended Thursday evening’s open house event at Oak Park. While there, they were greeted by Wilson teachers and administrators and toured classrooms and other areas such as the gymnasium and cafeteria. The Wilson ParentTeacher Organization even put together welcome packages for the students. On Monday, Oak Park students will take a field trip to Wilson to tour their new school. With re-districting affecting the boundaries of other elementary sites within the district, open house events were held at Hoover, Ranch Heights and Wayside elementary schools on Thursday evening as well. K9s in Flight set to dazzle again at SunFest Photo Special to The Bruin The K9s in Flight are scheduled to perform eight times at the 29th annual SunFest, which is scheduled to take place in Bartlesville’s Sooner Park from June 3-5. For the last few years, those times when SunFest has gone to the dogs have proven to be quite entertaining. Playful pooches will be back this year when the K9s in Flight perform several shows at the 29th annual SunFest, which is scheduled to take place from June 3-5 at Bartlesville’s Sooner Park. Affectionately known as “Oklahoma’s Biggest Outdoor Picnic,” SunFest is a family-friendly festival offering arts, crafts, food, a car show and plenty of music. There is no entry fee for Sun- Fest, and all performances by the K9s in Flight – as well as all of the musical acts – are offered free of charge. The K9s in Flight are scheduled to perform eight times over the span of this year’s SunFest. They are set to showcase their skills four times on Saturday as well as two times apiece on both Friday and Sunday. Each performance is expected to last 20 to 25 minutes. “We’re happy to be able to showcase the K9s in Flight this year,” says Bo Wilson, a member of the SunFest board of directors. “They put on a great show, and I think everyone will enjoy it.” One of the slogans of the K9s in Flight team is “homeless to high flying,” and it goes a long way toward describing the program. All of the dogs who perform – there are typically six per show – have been rescued or adopted from shelters across the country. Thus, while the show demonstrates the amazing ability of the canines, it also emphasizes the importance of good dog care – such as proper exercise and nutrition. During the performances, the dogs show off their high-jumping, Frisbee-catching abilities. The show is for audience members of all ages and usually leaves everyone smiling. Led by John Misita, the K9s in Flight have more than 15 years of professional experience, entertaining everywhere from state fairs to the halftime of NFL and NBA games. The program has been featured on the Discovery Channel, ESPN, the Disney Channel, HBO, the Jerry Lewis Telethon, MTV and Animal Planet, with which it toured. The K9s in Flight have been written about in newspapers and magazines around the country, also. The K9s in Flight performances are choreographed to display the best that each of the athletic dogs has to offer. In that way, they go far beyond a mere “pitch and catch” Frisbee show. During the shows, the dogs are featured on a set “stage” area. It features plenty of fun activities and challenges for the canine athletes to show off exactly what they can do. In addition, there is plenty of opportunity for fan participation in the frisky fun. The K9s in Flight shows are scheduled for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on SUNFEST - Continued to Page 10 Exiting educators at madison enjoy special ceremony Wayside honors retiring Dennis and spence A special retirement reception was held in the Wayside Elementary School library on Thursday afternoon for outgoing principal Richard Dennis and second grade teacher Gail Spence. Though graduation is scheduled for this evening, the BHS Class of 2011 won’t officially make its exit until Thursday, as some school days which were lost to inclement weather had to be added onto the end of the current 2010-11 academic year calendar. But when the Class of 2011 does conclude its time at BHS, it will most certainly be missed. “We are very proud of the Class of 2011,” says Brant. “They have faced many difficult moments along the way to their graduation, and they have a persevering spirit. “They are exceptional young men and women, and we look forward to seeing many good things from them in the future.” In all, an estimated 400 students are expected to be adorned in their traditional caps and gowns this evening as part of the graduation festivities. As is BHS tradition, all of the speeches and entertainment provided during commencement will be provided courtesy of members of the graduating class. Set to speak during this evening’s event are student body president Thomas Bridges and senior class president Emily Mueller.
