would strongly encourage you to complete one for extra credit to start off your ELA 9 experience.

Example
Chapter 1
“Piggy paused for breath and stroked the
glistening thing that lay in Ralph’s hands.
‘Ralph!’
Ralph looked up.
‘We can use this to call the others. Have a
meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-‘
He beamed at Ralph” (Golding 12).
Question/predict: ask questions while you read and try to
predict
Connections: text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-world
Analyze/evaluate: form opinions both while you are
reading and after you have finished. Develop your own
judgments about the characters and your own ideas
about events
Interpret: determine the meaning of what you have read
Reflect: What does the quote say about society and
humanity?
Challenging the text: disagree with the text or a situation
in the text
Example
This is a description of the conch shell that Piggy found in the
water on the beach when he was talking to Ralph. Having
realized they might not be alone, they hope to contact and call
together other surviving members of the plane crash. We use
these types of cues in our society today. During school we use a
bell system to help us remember when to switch classes and the
media to alter us to key events such as a Presidential address. I
wonder if the conch will become a symbol or could be an
example of foreshadowing later in the story.
2. Vocabulary
Find 20 new words throughout the novel you could not define if asked by your teacher. Copy the sentence from the
book and the page number. Then look up the word in a dictionary or dictionary.com and write the definition of the
word which best fits the context of the sentence.
“The shore was fledged with palm trees” (Golding 9).
To cover or adorn
3. Essay
What was the most important idea William Golding put forth in Lord of the Flies?
Use examples from the text to support and justify your answer.
4. Society Breakdowns
This novel mirrors the breakdown in society that people have experienced in history throughout the ages. There are
many examples in history when individuals rise to power with “bait” to entice the public to follow and maintain their
power through fear. Ralph and Piggy try to create fairness by using rules and ethical standards. However, Jack promises
freedom, food, and adventure using the threat of the “monster” until the sheer power of the mob endangers anyone
who does not join it.
Research the following events and write one paragraph for each topic which answers the following questions.
1. Hitler’s Germany during WWII
How was power obtained?
How was power maintained?
What was the effect of power?
2. Julius Caesar
How was power obtained?
How was power maintained?
What was the effect of power?
3. Crushing of student uprisings in China; Spring of 1989; Tiananmen Square
How was power obtained?
How was power maintained?
What was the effect of power?
4. After reading Lord of the Flies, try to envision what would have happened to the cadets if they had continued to live
under Jack’s power. Rewrite the ending based on what you learned with your research.
