President’s Report VOL. 4 Oct 15th 2012 Welcome to Fall everyone. As the sun now sets earlier it’s important to note that Range 2, our 100m Multi-Use Range, closes at dusk regardless of the closing time listed on the calendar; no shooting after the sun sets without prior approval from the club. Fall 2012 Edition ABBOTSFORD FISH AND GAME CLUB Regarding the calendar, as some of you may have noticed, there are errors. We are experiencing some problems with events not updating properly on the calendar when changes are made. You may notice conflicting events being listed for a range, for example, Range 3 may show a Police Rental and that it’s Open for Members/Guests. In this case always assume that the Rental is there, which means the range is closed. This is the type of error we are getting, and it’s being worked on. If you are unsure, contact me via [email protected] and I will let you know for sure. We’ve also been experiencing a lot of empty beer cans on the range, while I hope no one is drinking on the range. Due to the optics of this, we must insist that no alcoholic beverage containers be brought to the range for targets or otherwise. Anyone caught with beer cans and the like will be given a warning for the first offence, and have their membership removed on the 2nd. If you are caught drinking alcohol on the range your membership will be terminated immediately. This is a prohibited activity and extremely unsafe. Safety Glasses and Hearing Protection are also required for everyone on the range, even if they are not shooting. Anyone caught without both, will be asked to leave immediately, and if is a regular occurrence your membership may be terminated. Lastly, in this pleasant strain of discipline, Members are permitted 3 guests at a time MAXIMUM. You MUST sign them in, and pay for them before you step foot on the range. Failure to do so will result in the above mentioned warning for the first time and membership termination for the next. We are experiencing far too many people taking advantage of the club lately and it has to stop. Members pay for the range so they can use it, not so that other people can freeload. Now for the good stuff, the .22 club has received their new Savage Target .22’s and from all reports are quite happy with the new rifles. Reliable Guns in Vancouver sold the guns to the club at their cost, which Savage Arms reduced greatly to support our Jr. club. Please let both companies know you are appreciative of their support for our program. Steel Challenge is proving to be one of our busiest shooting clubs with great matches over the past summer. There is more steel on the way, including a Texas Star, which will prove to be a great target to be frustrated over I’m sure. Archery has been incredibly busy as of late, and as our biggest club that’s saying a lot. From what I understand the last summer has seen a big increase due to the recent slate of movies showing archery in cool action flicks. It is truly a great thing to see Hollywood have such a positive influence on a sport. Rob Engh President Caretakers’ Report We have had a beautiful summer and now that the cooler weather has begun, it would be great to see you all out at the range and involved with some of our sub clubs. With the shorter days, the lights on range 3 and 4 and the archery range are being put to good use allowing all of our members to come and shoot their firearms in the evening. Just a reminder: According to our range rules, ALCOHOL is prohibited on AFGC property. Alcohol and guns do not mix. We are scheduling a workbee for Saturday November 3 to do fall range cleanup and build more target backers to get ready for a busy winter season of shooting. Come out and get to know some of our members and help with preparation for the winter season. Our weekly practice nights are also very popular and a great way for everyone to practice the stages they do the worst on at the matches. For the fall/winter we are continuing our weekly practice but will be running some fun pistol and shotgun 2 gun steel matches instead of the regulation steel challenge matches. We hope to see even more people out at the practice nights, we have classes for .22lr pistols and rifles so even your kids can come out and shoot (we have had shooters as young as 10 out). See you at practice! Images: A few snapshots of the variety of firearms and the age of participants with the Steel Challenge Club (Above) Trap Club For September’s shoot, the trap boy was a no-show once again. Fortunately only seven shooters showed - we shot a practice, and a few toonie shoots. In August, AFGC won the Interclub Match and the trophy will be displayed in our new trophy display case. December 16th is the Christmas Turkey Shoot, which starts at 10 am for a $5.00 entry fee. We will be in 6 man squads this year. Every 3rd Sunday is Trap Sunday 10am—3pm - Upcoming Sunday shoots are: October 21st, November 18th, December 16th, and January 20th . Bring your shotgun and come try it out! It was very steep and he had already rolled down 100 yards before he came to rest against a huge downed snag. He was too heavy for Darrell and I to reposition for better pictures and we were afraid he might get away on us a roll another 200 yards, so took a couple and then got to work deboning. It was one of my best years yet, for the number of animals I saw and called in, but it wasn't until the last evening that I had a Spike coming down the mountain. He disappeared in the thick bush, but I continued calling and to my good luck, I got a answer from down the valley and could tell by the chuckle that this was a bigger elk. After 15 minutes I finally spotted him, not where I thought he would come in, but about 100 yards away and up on the mountain. There this big animal stood for the next 45 minutes only chuckling to my cow calls and when I would entice him with a small bugle, he would rake up the bush with his massive rack as I saw it from where I was, what every Elk hunter dreams of. I realized this Elk was not going to come in and it was going to be dark soon, and then to my disbelief he was not in the picture any more (was he coming in or leaving?) I gave him a small bugle, he chuckled right away and I knew he was leaving, so I baled out of the blind and went after him cow calling. When I got through the thick bush on the bottom, the mountainside went UP and opened up with good shooting lanes. I gave out a small bugle again behind me and he charged down and into one of those shooting lanes and then the real work began, but after looking at him on the ground and up close, it didn't seem like work at all.
