1. Queen Liliuokalani:
She ruled over Hawaii. Yet, the USA wanted to control the sugar market in Hawaii.
Therefore, they helped with an uprising against the Queen to control the region.
2. William Seward:
He convinced the USA to purchase Alaska from the Russians.
3. Emilio Aguinaldo:
After the Spanish American war, the USA tried to control the Philippines. Aguinaldo
rose up against the USA in the Philippine-American War. His rebellion failed.
4. Alfred Mahan:
Mahan urged the USA to build up its military might to compete with the trend of
imperialism going around in Europe.
Part B: Short Answer: Instructions: Answer the questions below.
1. How did the USA get involved in the Spanish American War? What was the outcome of the War?
The USA wanted Spain to give Cuba independence. Yet, the USA did not use force until an
explosion occurred on the USS Maine. Spain was blamed and the USA declared war. When the
war was over, the USA gained Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico. Cuba was left
independent, but made a protectorate of the USA.
2. What was the Russo-Japanese War? How did Teddy Roosevelt impact the conflict?
In this conflict, Russia and Japan were fighting over various areas, including Korea. Teddy
Roosevelt decided to get the United States involved. He brought both sides together and
convinced them to sign the Treaty of Portsmouth, which ended the conflict.
3. Why did the USA support Panama in their rebellion against Columbia? What did the USA have to gain in the
conflict?
The USA wanted to fund the completion of the Panama Canal. Columbia was not cooperative in
the endeavor. When the people of Panama rebelled, the USA supported their cause. The USA
wanted the area of Panama to support the canal. After their rebellion, they did just that and the
canal was built.
4. What was the Platt Amendment? How did it impact the relationship of the USA and Canada?
After the Spanish American war, Cuba was left independent. Yet, the USA was concerned and
wanted more control in Cuban affairs. The Platt Amendment stated that Cuba, though
independent, would be a protectorate of the USA. This meant that the USA would have great
influence over Cuba, even though the nation was independent.
