Written entirely by Bob Stewart, President Ozarks’ Coin Club Since this is my January 2013 column I think we will do a little looking back and a little looking forward. Sort of like the “Reverse” and “Obverse” of a 2012 OCC. When I look at the “Reverse”, it looks good, at least a MS64. We have added many new members and have only lost a couple. Some members have had health issues but are still hanging in there. The IRS is still looking at our paperwork but they haven’t put anyone in Jail. We are current on all our bills and still have money in the bank. We were able to help the McDonald County Coin Club expand their YN program. The picnic was cooler, the Christmas Party was warmer and nobody got sick on the bus. The Fall Show was better than ever and Security didn’t need to shoot anybody. Our auctions and presentations were fun and interesting. The Library is improving and our relationship with the Discovery Center is good and expanding. Overall, a solid 64!! When I look at the “Obverse”, it’s tougher to grade. The Board has plans for the Club that should grade at least a MS65 or higher. We are scheduling trips, planning for the show, picnic and the Christmas party. The auction team is gearing up and making improvements. Speakers are being scheduled. Summer Seminar trips for our YN’s are being planned. The board makeup looks to be stable with most members indicating they are willing serve another year. There is a real chance we may get a “Net” grade though. We will lose our long term YN Coordinator after our January meeting. So far no one has stepped up to lead the program. The Board feels we need to split up the job Jim was doing amongst many members so the workload is shared. Members will need to step forward and teach a class on an area they are knowledgeable on. To keep the program healthy we all need to contribute to that 65 in 2013. Stay well and let’s have a great 2013!!!!!! May all be blessed, Jim Ina Mayer & Michelle Stewart received plants that Katzfey’s donated Information regarding Coin of the Month is taken from the U.S. Mint web site http://www.usmint.gov/kids/coinNews/coinOfTheMonth/2012/12.cfm Coin of the Month Obverse: A portrait of Grover Cleveland is the central feature of this design. Reverse: The Statue of Liberty accompanies the inscriptions "United States of America" and "$1." Other inscriptions are found around the coin's edge. Cleveland Presidential $1 Coin Bill here, covering the second Grover Cleveland Presidential $1 Coin. Cleveland was not the first president who served two terms, but he was the only president who served two non-consecutive terms. That is, he ran for the office three times but won only the first and the third time. That's why two dollar coins bear his name. Cleveland was re-elected in 1892, the year the Chicago World's Fair opened. To support the fair, Congress had the United States Mint create the first commemorative coin: a silver half dollar honoring Christopher Columbus on the 400th anniversary of his landing in the New World. A Queen Isabella coin soon followed. During his second term, Cleveland dealt swiftly with several serious issues: For a border dispute in Venezuela, he forcefully led Great Britain to settle. For a railroad strike in Chicago where workers ignored a court injunction, he sent in federal troops. For a national financial depression (the Panic of 1893), he had the Sherman Silver Purchase Act repealed (which required the Treasury to buy silver every month) and replenished the dwindling gold supply. Although the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was repealed, the national depression only got worse. For this and other reasons, Cleveland became less and less popular and the Democratic party refused to nominate him for another term. After leaving the White House, Cleveland retired to Princeton, New Jersey. He died in 1908. Find out more about Cleveland on the Grover Cleveland Presidential $1 Coin page and about his first term in last summer's Making Cents. —Bill OZARKS’ COIN CLUB, INC. P.O.
