Welcome to the 2013-2014 School Year!
Thank you parents, students and staff for helping make this a successful start to the
new school year. We have had so many wonderful opening activities and I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and participation in making the following events a huge success: Kindergarten Sneak Peek, Kindergarten and New Parent Welcome, Open House
and Curriculum Night, Spanish Immersion Pot Luck and our first PTO meeting. I
hope these events and the ones to come will continue to foster the strong community
we have created at Lincoln School.

Please join me in welcoming the new faculty members to the Lincoln staff. I am glad
to add these skilled professionals to our team:

Congratulations
Congratulations to Mrs. Meisinger, third grade teacher, on the birth of her son, Bryce
on June 20th and to Mrs. Valverde, first grade teacher, on the birth of her daughter
Soliel on July 25th. Congratulations to Mrs. Knox on the upcoming birth of her second
child who is due mid-November. Miss Hull, kindergarten teacher, was married over
the summer. Congratulations Mrs. Rupnow!
Important Attendance Information
The State of Illinois has requested that schools in Oak Park be in compliance with the
state requirements defining attendance. In order for a student in grades 2-5 to be
counted as present for the entire morning, the student must be present for 150
minutes of instructional class time. Therefore, any student in grades 2-5 who arrives
at Lincoln after 8:30 or who is absent for any 30 minute portion of the morning is considered absent for the entire morning because they do not meet the 150 minute state
guideline. The state guideline for K and 1st graders is 120 minutes of class time.
For the afternoon, any student in grades 2-5 who leaves before 2:30 or who is absent

Principal’s Message (Continued from page 1)
for any 30 minute portion of the afternoon, is also not meeting the 150 minute guideline for half day attendance.
That student will be counted as absent for the entire afternoon. For K-1 students, the guideline is 120 minutes
of instructional time and they will be counted absent if they miss 60 minutes of class time.
Because Wednesday is a shorter day, any student who arrives after 8:05 is considered to be absent for the entire
morning. For K-1st graders on Wednesday, the cut-off is 8:30. Any student in 2-5 who leaves on Wednesday afternoon before the 2:00 bell is considered to be absent a half day. The K-1st graders who are out of school for 30
minutes in the afternoon are considered absent for a half day. Please be aware of these guidelines as you make
appointment arrangements for your children. The district does not receive state aid for the half days that students are counted absent. That is why we need to keep accurate attendance records that reflect when students
arrive at school and when they leave as these records are subject to audit by the State of Illinois. Once again,
this is state mandated and required in all of the schools in our district.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher conferences will be held during the week of October 7 th. If you have not set up a conference with
your child’s teacher, please email them to set up a time. It is important that parents participate in their child’s
education by meeting with the teacher. This offers an opportunity for information sharing and cooperatively
planning the best educational program for each child. We want all parents to be actively involved in their child’s
education by:
 attending Parent Teacher conferences
 talking about school each day
 praising effort and achievements daily
 reading together for a minimum of 15 minutes each day
 building self-discipline routines together
 stressing the importance of punctual daily attendance
 encouraging the completion of all homework assignments
 communicating regularly with teachers
 participating in or regularly attending
activities during the year
Weather Watch
We intend to go outdoors every day
at recess and lunchtime and expect
students to be dressed to match the
weather conditions. We stay indoors on rainy days and those bitter
days during the winter months. We
provide inside activities for the students if we are not able to go outdoors. Some of the indoor activities
include movies, basketball, board
games, card games, coloring, reading and library/computer activities.
Thank You PTO
The entire Lincoln staff would like
to thank the PTO for the remodeled
teacher’s lounge. I know you will
agree that it is absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you, PTO, for your valued
support and contributions to the
school.

hunger-related charities who make a difference
in the lives of families in need.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
On Thursday December 5th, 2013, the Lincoln School community will once again gather
together for a Pasta Dinner hosted and served by Lincoln School’s 5th grade
students. Dinner includes pasta, salad and bread provided by local merchants.
All net proceeds will benefit this year’s hunger relief charities that will be selected and researched by the 5th grade students.
Last year, almost 500 Lincoln School students, staff, and family attended the event. As a result, the 5th grade students donated $3,200
to Action Against Hunger, Heifer International, and Trees For Life.

Oak Park Education Foundation (OPEF) at
Lincoln
When Lincoln’s library is transformed into a castle or your child comes home
engineering Legos into machines, chances are you’re seeing an Oak Park Education Foundation project in action. The Oak Park Education Foundation is a
non-profit organization that creatively enhances the District 97 curriculum by partnering
artists, architects, engineers, and scientists with our amazing Lincoln teachers and their students. You’ve heard of the OPEF’s award-winning Vex Robotics program at our middle
schools, but OPEF programming runs throughout a child’s K-8 education in D97. Every year
at Lincoln, our students’ learning is opened to real-world applications with experts in their
fields.
From practicing yoga to dissecting a sheep heart, planning onion dome architecture to redesigning Graue Mill to make it accessible to students of any physical ability, our Lincoln students are learning by doing with the Oak Park Education Foundation. Prioritize Reading at Home
A Message from Mrs. Davidhizar, Reading Specialist
Welcome back to a new school year! I hope that the beginning of this year has been off to a good
start, for you and your child. Every year the Lincoln staff encourages students to commit to reading regularly at home, above and beyond the usual homework. Here is an article that supports
this important priority. Thank you for supporting your child in his/her reading progress!
Happy Reading! Mrs. Davidhizar, Reading Specialist
****************************************
"Why can't I skip my twenty minutes of reading tonight?"
SOURCE: U.S. Dept. of Education, America Reads Challenge. (1999) "Start Early,
Finish Strong: How to Help Every Child Become a Reader." Washington, D.C.
Let's figure it out...mathematically!
Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night...or not at all.
Step1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 min. a week.
Student B reads 4 min. x 5 times a week = 20 min. a week.
Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 400 min. a month.
Student B reads 80 min. a month.
Step 3:
Multiply min. a month x 9 months.
Student A reads 3600 min. in a school year.
Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.
Student A practices reading the equivalent of 10 whole school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only 2 days of reading practice per year.
By the end of 6th grade (if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits...
Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 school days.
Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.
One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance.
In addition, we can also expect that students who read daily will...read better...know more...write
better...have a better understanding of vocabulary...and will have the joy of reading established
in their lives. Thank you for giving your child the gift of time, each day...to read.

Physical Education News from Mrs. Madura
We had a lot of fun working with cooperative
games and activities to start our
school year. Before we knew it,
we were already in our gymnastics unit! Students had the opportunity to experience tumbling,
balance beam, uneven parallel

Second Grade Looping with Mrs.

Welcome back and jump right in! That is what we have done in
grade 2 Looping! We are working hard on Common Core Standards in math, reading and writing.
In math, we are working on place value up to 1000 and figuring out how to do graphs and interpret data. In reading, we are focusing on identifying characters, setting and plot, and also
learning how to better ask and answer questions about a literary selection. In writing, we are

we can't forget the grammar, mechanics, punctuation and capitalization!
We are looking forward to our field trip on Thursday, October 17, to Kline Creek Farms. It's

trip ties in wonderfully with our non-fiction reading selection "Family Farm Then and Now"
Our students are enjoying the beautiful weather too, and it is good to see them being respectful and helpful to one another. That is the Lincoln way!

We are happily working and playing under

how each student manages their
day.
We have been working to understand the parts of a flower as well
as how trees and plants produce
their own food and why that production is shut down until next spring. We
have read some books about seeds and have
looked at the roots of some sunflowers from
my yard. We have examined seeds from various plants and watched a kidney bean grow,
and dissected other beans to see the baby
plant inside. So far we have enjoyed two short
walks to find seeds still on trees and those on
the ground and decided how those particular
seeds would travel. Along the walks,
the children used some binoculars to
watch the very busy squirrels in the
trees. Science is a blast and the culminating event for all of this fabulous
learning is a trip to the Morton Arboretum (all 5 classes) on October 24th.
Permission slips will be coming home
soon.
We have been looking at character

from the start of a story to the end. Children
are being asked to locate the evidence of these
traits after reading a book or story. We are
